I think they're incredibly hard to love personally. Easy to like, and when in the mood truly enjoyable. But he's really using musical ideas as paint thrown on a painting sometimes. |

Nope. Definitely sounds like a treat though. But I would be extremely surprised if I found something like that in a store here Edited by LinusW - October 14 2008 at 20:12 |

Franco Battiato. An artist of many faces, bigger than any genres. Refined, intelligent, sometimes a little bit cold. I have the feeling he was never a rock musician in nature, even in his earlier works. It does not mean he can't rock. He can - just listen and watch to his 2005 live (CD+DVD) album "Un soffio al cuore di natura elettrica".
He's so prolific, there's a lot of things to discover, I guess most of his works deserve attention. Though I don't think I will ever love his minimalistic works of mid 70's. And obviously it's much easier to get into Battiato's works, if you speak Italian. |

Many good points there. The part in bold pretty much sums up my general impressions. |

Save your money for something better. The book is mostly made up of pictures, and there is very little info on the bands as such. It could be worth getting only if you are totally in the dark about RPI, as the CD included can be considered as a sort of 'best of' as regards the genre. However, the price tag is quite hefty (over 20 euros, if I remember correctly.. we saw it at the FNAC store in Milan), and on the whole I don't think it's worth it. |

POP in the 60's. But without salt!
Prog in their first 3 albums
Fluxus in the rst of 70's album (and in 'L'Egitto Prima Delle Sabbie' and 'Franco Battiato' Battiato is only the composer!)
From 1979... Great Avant- Garde POP music!
In 80's and 90's Battiato also has produced good Classic Music albums.
In definitive Battiato, for me, is one of the best genius of Italian Music! Edited by Mandrakeroot - October 16 2008 at 05:23 |

yes... you are right to be afraid... the man is a genius.. but some of that stuff... . whoa. Unless you are into Stockhausen and all that sh*t. His 80's stuff is something I think you would enjoy as well.... but any of the first 4 are definitely THE place to start for the prog fan

MURPLE — Io Sono Murple
Review by ZowieZiggy (Daniel) Prog Reviewer As many other Italian bands from the seventies, Murple only released one album. But a very good one. And the good news, is that they have just released a second one called Quadri Di Un Esposizione It consists of two epic songs which are very well written IMO. The first one is a fantastic journey into the best of the Italian repertoire. Lush keyboards are wonderful. At times really hard while subtle and almost classic during other moments. The vocal parts, although scarce are very pleasant as well. The whole piece is extremely varied; it is changing mood every minute or two. The listener has really no time to breathe and install himself in some comfortable and tranquil musical experience. His senses are always in alert during the whole of this long track, or combination of short tracks (the whole clocking at just over seventeen minutes). The closing section is an extraordinary fusion between guitars and frenetic organ. Such a beautiful way to end a great piece of music. The second track, is not as strong (but was it possible?). It sounds less cohesive, more a collection of several parts put together to fit an epic costume (which is the case by the way). It sounds also less personal, more Genesis. But the experience is also worth. The piano play from Preludio is majestic, vocal sections are still emotive (Tra I Fili), the frenzy of the keys during Variazoni completely breaks the soft mood (which was not too bad at this time). The Fratello part features weaker vocals although the instrumental section is quite good actually. Just like Un Mundo Cosí. This is a very good album which I rate with four stars. An Italian jewel (as there are so many…). |
