Topic: Favourite Track on Dream Theater's BC&SL Posted: July 08 2009 at 16:40 |
I know it's not been out long, but I'm really into DT's latest offering and am curious to know what is the most popular choice of favourite track on the album.

.... and I'll kick off the poll by voting for my favourite, The Shattered Fortress.

Either Nightmare to Remember or The Count of Tuscany. Although I think a lot of people will at least agree with me that this is the freshest thing DT's done in the past few years.
Went with Nightmare because, while Count is one of the best epics they've written (and might be my favorite DT epic of all time), I expect it to get plenty of votes from others.

Yeah I have to say A Nightmare to Remember and The Count of Tuscany come a very close second and third! It's a great album - I think Wither is the weakest track but it's still ok. I sometimes have to skip over The Best of Times because, whilst it's a beautiful track, it doesn't half make me cry.

What about none of them ? :D
Dream Theater have watered down their music A LOT over the course of the years in my opinion.
I honestly feel none of these songs deserve an honorable mention anywhere.
And that's coming from someone who loves SFAM, Awake, SDOIT & a little of ToT!
They composed some excellent stuff but now they just can't anymore.
All of their stuff is very weak and I think a lot of people will agree with me.
Of course there are newcomers who will say it's good, but I don't think their opinion will last for a long time.

1. The Best of Times 2. The Count of Tuscany 3. Wither 4. A Rite of Passage 5. The Shattered Fortress 6. A Nightmare to Remember
Nonetheless, this is a 5 star album, IMO. It's the 3rd best DT album after SFAM and 6D.

This is so full of fail. If you want to bash DT, go do it somewhere else. I'm sick of hearing it.

A nightmare to remember is actually the first song on the album that really stuck with me. It has so many moods in it. The song that resonates the most with me is The BEst of Times however. It is the most moving song the band has ever done.
And whats so good about the Count of Tuscany? The lyrics are beyond comedy!!

As opposed to "day after day and night after night..."?

A very strong album in its entirety, possibly their best since Awake, so it's hard to choose a favourite. Went with Nightmare, but it could have been pretty much anything.

It's a tie between "The Count of Tuscany" and "The Best of Times" for me.

The Count of Tuscany has the most good parts in it, it's cheesy like the rest but who gives... A Nightmare to Remember might have like one redeeming part... The Best of Times is Mike Portnoy trying to do Neal Morse and inevitably failing, I can't blame him for trying though. :P The beginning of A Rite of Passage is good then it dies immediately... The Shattered Fortress, that one catchy riff...
This is honestly the best way to describe this album for me, DT pulling of a few good parts in between the sh*tstorm of mediocrity... I wouldn't be pissed off at most bands for sucking, they actually do suck, DT are f**king great though, and yet they suck now... and don't give me the, "they're making the music they want to make, don't listen if you blah blah" crap... I'll complain if a great band is spiraling into complacent, cliche, trendy, wannabe tough guy metal... except in epic songform to carry on their image of being "prog". DT can do better, more musical, more original.

I actually think he's right (although I haven't heard their latest, so that applies jut to Octavarium and Systematic Chaos). But what I'm also sick of is when some opinions are instantly dismissed as bashing. You either love a band or you're an idiotic ignorant who couldn't tell good music if it bit his ass (in the good words of Frank Zappa). Whatever happened to moderate opinions? As long as they're argued correctly, I don't mind seeing them. I actually think this is the whole point of having a forum. If we all agree that band X is so great, what are even doing discussing their music here? Like others, I also think DT have reached their creative pinnacle some time ago and have been on a descending trend since (their popularity pinnacle however is somewhat of a different issue). Still, I have become rather interested in hearing their newest output, at least for the fact that their artwork reminds me of Awake.

^ I kind of agree with Moving Pictures on this one.
It's not that a negative opinion on the CD or the band is instantly dismissed. There are 25 threads in the other forums that are chock full of much the same arguments. This is supposed to be a Poll, "Favorite Track on Dream Theater's BC & SL". The Dream Theater bashing is defiantly off topic for this thread.
With that being said, I'm going to give the first vote for "A Rite of Passage". "The Count of Tuscany" is great, but the lyrics detract from the music. "A Nightmare to Remember" has the most beautiful bit, but again, the lyrics stand out and the remainder of the song isn't as good as the middle.
I don't know if "A Rite of Passage" has lyrics that are as bad as the other two, they simply don't draw enough attention to themselves to become a mark against the song. In addition, it's the song that I find gets stuck in my head most from this album. Very catchy chorus.

I think the album is the best since SFAM but it's not perfect.
The order of songs in my opinion, starting with the best:
6. Wither (decent and enjoyable but nothing up to the rest's standards)
