I have always been a bit weak for the middle section of 'Mad Man Moon'. I think Banks' playing is superb here. However there are better moments, many of them mentioned. I can't really decide.

Firth of Fifth-although the whole band is excellent throughout the whole piece, the piano-led interlude is Banks best moment in Genesis, and also the best passage of SEBP for me.

If you use the board's own search button and you let it look for Genesis threads for the last six months and older, you get 13 pages of Genesis threads. You can always revive an old thread that you're interested in or make your own thread

Wow, I wish people on this board would discuss Genesis more frequently. I feel like I never hear anything about them or King Crimson when I'm looking through the threads.

Good to see Riding the Scree get some love! I agree, that's one of his best. I also love Cinema Show, that extended is possibly his big synth tour de force. It is very hard to pick a moment, though, as his playing is very iconic of the band and is quite distinct from the other big keyboardists of the time. Dance of the Giant Hogweed I agree is a good one, but rather than the intro I'd say the instrumental bit. That part is just sublime.
I've always felt Firth of Fifth, while extraordinarily impressive, is a bit cheesy, by sole virtue of the descending chromatic line in the left hand. |

I have to go with the solo on Cinema Show. To this day it's my favorite keyboard solo and one of the more influential pieces on my Keyboard style. I love how fragile the melody sounds the first time around, the beauty of the simple square wave patch puts the hairs on the back of my neck at attention. The second time through when he adds the choir underneath is when it really shines. Suddenly the soft fragile melody takes on a new sense of power with the choir underneath of it. I've used so many choir patches when I was playing, all traced back to this moment.

I love Banks, and my personal favourite is Charm from The Fugitive - a great instrumental that has never lost its magic for me.

The solo in the instrumental coda to "Cinema Show"
Solo on "Down and Out"
The melody and harmonies in the theme of "Hairless Heart"

I think when Hackett uses tapping on Hogweed. For those of you who do not know, he provides the higher harmony.

Hey, that's funny, all my favourite moments have already been mentioned!
I can't decide which is better: "The Cinema Show" or that extraordinary solo (with Steve Hackett taking such a fabulous "sweep") in "Robbery, Assault and Battery". Gorgeous stuff!!! |

Many too many...to choose from but,
from the searing Hammond organ of The Knife to the opening Mellotron chords of Watcher of the Skies, onto The Cinema Show and further on though to The Lady Lies and Follow You,Follow Me,the list is endless. My choice,if I really have to make one, is The Battle of Epping Forest. He uses every instrument,Synth,Hammond and Mellotron,to fantastic effect on this track. Not the favourite track of many Genesis acolytes but definately one of my favourites. The following track,After the Ordeal,is 'rather good' too. It's a tour de force for both Hackett and Banks...Damn it! I vote for practically the whole of Selling England by the Pound...Sorry...there it is. Edited by Man Erg - July 31 2009 at 18:29 |

Has to be the opening intro to "Watcher Of The Skies"...it's iconic in prog music, even 35 years later. All any keyboard player has to do is play those two opening chords B Major 7 - C# Major, and every prog fan starts drooling at the mouth.
