I guess this thread makes me realize that I'm a purist for the most part.  Even with iTunes, 99% I play whole albums, in order, even if the album is a collection of songs and not some concept through (and when it comes to vinyl, it's time to just leave it alone, play that whole record).  If I don't listen to a whole album in one sitting it's just because of time constraints.  Some days you can't take in all of Tales from Topographic Oceans or Tago Mago at once, so you catch up on it the next day.

Now there are times when you need to hear that one song; in a case like that I'm not so crazy as to think, well I want to hear that one 6 minute song so I'm going to have to find 40 or more minutes to do it since I'm a slave to the whole record.  And of course there are times when you don't need to hear that one song.  "Money" by Floyd was mentioned above and it's a good example; who, of a certain age, hasn't heard that song enough on the radio over the decades?  That, or say "Stairway to Heaven", can be skipped often, despite their high quality, just due to the over-saturation of my addled ears.  This way, when on occasion I do play them, it's a special event.

P.S. Micky:  Looks like no one got your reference.  Funny though.

I agree in that I listen to the whole of TAAB (and quite often, really), but must say I much prefer Side One. If I only had 20 mins I know which of the two I'd play...
It's not that I can't find worth in anything, it's just that I can't find worth in enough.

Tarkus does not take my vote, but TAAB does. I've heard it enough times to understand the second side is only a mere remix of the first.
Trendsetter win!

Albums can be a bit like the live show where the group kicks off with their most immediate tracks and then slides into the deep and meaningful stuff. I know they are not progressive, but I always liked Nazareth because they rocked from start-to-finish. It is also surprisingly easy to get used to the track order which has been decided by someone at a record company. Abbey Road is a blatant mis-sequence due to error, but it still works. I have the cassette version of Boston's first album and now I cannot listen to it in vinyl album order, because I expect a different track next. In answer to the question, it depends on my mood. I tend to pick out individual tracks some days and on others I listen to a side (either one or two) or the whole album.

Hmmm... probably the second side of In the Land of Grey and Pink. It's such a change of pace from the first that sometimes i'm not in the mood

Tarkus for sure

also to some extent Duke where at least 3-4 songs go unplayed on side two. That said it does have Duke's Travels which is way better than anything on Tarkus Side 2.
