So...?
On another topic... are Between the buried and me the current kings of prog metal? I think so! |

Perhaps not the kings of metal but i do enjoy them. Not too keen on the vocals tho. The end of White Walls is just geniously epicly metally brilliance

I hate to say that I'm not really feeling The Great Misdirect the way everyone else is feeling about it. Nontheless, it's still a really good album by an awesome band. I'll pick Colors, which really still is incredible.

This is pretty much where I stand on it. However, TGM isn't really getting as much love as I think the post implies. It's growing on me, but it still doesn't beat the magic, chaos and wild creativity explored on Colors.

Oh, I think BTBAM are the current kings of prog metal, yes. They do have a couple of bands threatening that, though.

Colors has got to be my favorite from them, though The Great Misdirect did impress me greatly.

Colors... I don't know if they'll be able to top it ever. I think I might like Alaska better than TGM.
I don't think there is a king of prog metal "right now"... the scene is pretty weak currently. If there is one overall it's Dream Theater though, who BTBAM took a lot of influence from (as they got better).

I think the king of prog metal right now could very well be Between The Buried and Me or Mastodon. I think Pain of Salvation is headed downhill, Symphony X and Tool are beginning to fade, and Opeth is still up there. While I love DT's newest album, many people do not, and you could argue that they are no longer the kings. |

Lol at the thought that DT are still the kings of prog metal. If you spend 5 minutes on a metal-based website, they are definitely NOT the kings of prog metal anymore. Bands like Mastodon and BtBaM most certainly are though.
Honestly, I was expecting a huge disappointment from TGM, simply because I thought there was no way Colors could be topped... and I was 100% wrong. Not only is TGM as good as Colors, but I honestly think it surpasses it. The clean parts are so much better, it's a more varied album, and it grooves in all the right places while still being ridiculously technical. I would even say BtBaM is a modern metal version of King Crimson to an extent, in terms of experimentation (and to put it in terms most any person on this site could understand ). And of the metal bands of today, Opeth and BtBaM are the two best at shifting dynamics as far as I'm concerned. Oh, and did I mention I went to the first concert for their current tour last night? Oh, and as far as I'm concerned, the current prog metal scene is exploding. You just aren't digging deep enough. Edited by birdwithteeth11 - November 08 2009 at 19:48 |

^^ Definitely. There are so many prog metal bands out there, I don't even know how it is "weak" at all. I wouldn't consider Opeth to be kings any longer either though. I love them to death, but I think after Ghost Reveries Mastodon and BTBAM began stealing the spotlight.

^Ghost Reveries was incredible. I think after Watershed they lost me. Too many great albums came out in between the two records for Watershed to match.
^^What set did BTBAM play?

I think its still a little bit early for this, but then again while I'm really enjoying TGM I doubt it will surpass Colors anytime soon. Every time you listen to Colors it's as fresh and exciting as the first time. So much creativity packed into 60 mins.
The current kings of Prog metal yes, but as Chris said there's others not far behind.

+1 on all of that. As for the royal title, not as long as Opeth is still around, something the boys in BTBAM would probably agree with themselves, since they're all massive Opeth-fans.

Am I the only one who isn´t heavily cuming in their pants with Swim to the moon? Isn´t it just a bit too much? Or do I need to listen to it a few more times? Most probably
Oh, and right, the current kings of metal... along with Mastodon! How could I forget? |

Meh, Opeth have been going downhill since Blackwater Park IMO, and there is certainly a lot of people that think GR is better than Watershed, whereas BTBAM and Mastodon are both very much in the ascendancy.
