I just want to say that czech republic, poland and slovakia are CENTRAL european countries, and romania, yugoslavia and croatia are SOUTH european. A little bit of geography doesn't hurt: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Europe

Whenever PA is not a Geographical site, I think the use of Socio-political "Eastern Europe" is absolutely logical. We're speaking about music there (not about climat), and all this region countries has common progressive rock history because of Socialist repressions or even occupation |

And if you're starting a debate about geography: -Yugoslavia doesn't exist anymore -Croatia once was part of EX YU, so why are you mentioning it separately? -At school we were taught, that SLO, a part of EX YU is a Central Europe country, but I agree with Snobb, that this doesn't really matter right now. |

I know that this division is accurate while talking about past, but using it today makes a whole lot of people think that things are still that way in Europe. And later I hear people talking: oh, you're from poland? so you understand russian? - NO, I DO NOT UNDERSTAND A WORD OF THIS LANGUAGE :)

I perfectly understand both.Prog has it's history, and its history is related with region history. So -I don't think one's political symphaties are enough serious reason for changing the history (Personally ,I don't like Russian language as well)

Nobody thinks that is still "that way" in Europe, but so many people in Eastern Europe are knowing that the fact is that some countries are really EX YU just because those countries never ever existed before Yougoslavia - those are Slovenia and Macedonia. There's a big difference between "Southern Europe" and "SouthEastern Europe". The former is Greece, Italy, Spain, Cyprus, Portugal, all those sunny countries washed by the sea. The latter is Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, the former Yugoslavia - the southern part of Eastern Europe (a term that is both geographical and political; Southern Europe is only a geographical term). |

Well, geographically Romania is 100% Eastern Europe. But you should know that Central Europe is also a historical/cultural term much more than a geographical term.

All these countries, including Poland, are put together. I could have named it Eastern European / Central European / South-Eastern European / Baltic states / Balkan states, but that wouldn't fit into name limit category ? Besides it's pointless, most people will figure out. As far as I hear, Czech Republic is country that would be "the most Central Europe" country. It's sometimes dubbed as "heart" of Europe, but purpose of this thread isn't to discuss proper naming, or to conceive the best name for this thread. Purpose is to talk about music. |

BTW, I am listening to Vladimir Misik & ETC (the album from 1976) and it's very good. Sounds so Western! There are even moments of Country and Southern Rock. Very intriguing. |

 anyway, I tried lately Bijelo Dugme (yugoslavian band) I found on PA, but it turned out to be a pretty nice rock, but not really progressive... But I was surprised to see Goran Bregovic in members because I knew him from his present work, which is hmm... let's say he does duets with a minor polish pop stars, and the result of this work are hits played mostly during rural weddings |

Goran Bregovic was a member of Yugoslavian band Bijelo Dugme, and they were one of most popular band in former Yu in their time. His solo career later is different, but even now he is possibly most popular Balkan musician (with his Balkan/Gypsy orchestra). Not prog, but great music on its own manner. His works with some Polish good contemporary jazz musicians are quite good as well. In Polish rural weddings I often heard quite different music from Bregovic/Kayah. :) |
