Topic: Ilayaraja for Indo Prog/Raga Rock? Posted: August 07 2010 at 10:35
This is a far out suggestion but here goes anyway. Ilayaraja is better known in India as a prolific film music composer but he also composed two non-film instrumental albums which explore the fusion of Carnatic, Hindustani, Western classical, jazz, funk and a bit of rock. They are called How to Name It and Nothing But Wind (the second in collaboration with Hariprasad Chaurasia, the renowned Hindustani flautist) and came out in 1987 and 1988 respectively. Indo prog, perhaps? Here are some samples:
Don't Compare from How to Name It (the title in the video is wrong):
Do Anything from the same album:
Singing Self from Nothing But Wind:
Composer's Breath from the same album:
More information about How to Name It and the man himself, can't find a link with information about Nothing But Wind (though I will reproduce from the liner notes, if need be )

The style of composition in much of his film music is not really different, but since it's firstly too vast (big enough to dwarf Zappa and Wakeman!) and secondly is usually set in pop structure, I won't suggest it here. Can suggest songs for anybody whose interest might be kindled by these tracks.

Er, I hope he didn't mean "report for abuse"? I personally think it's sorta like world music and only suggested it because I am not too sure where world music ends and Indo Prog begins. I mean, Shakti is in Indo Prog but I would put it in world music. Have another far out suggestion from India after this one is settled. Again, a great and underrated artist but of more recent vintage.
