@Peter: Focus and Sinfield were great, thanks! If only I found full albums with this kind of stuff. Proggers mostly use it only to bring some diversity. I'll check the folk recommendations later. Cheers!

Steve Hackett and John Hackett - Sketches Of Satie.

Steve plays guitar and John plays flute all the way through. Very nice although whether its 'ethereal' enough for your taste I wouldn't like to say.

Although not from the CD this is also rather beautifull:

"Love Remembered" -- Focus
(Gentle, slow, and pretty.)

Folk, especially Irish folk, is full of lovely flute music. One such Irish trad band with a lot of flute is Altan. The track "Dobbin's Flowery Vale" is absolutely lovely (perhaps my favourite flute piece)  with stately and beautiful flute (played by the late, great Frankie Kennedy) as the main instrument. Sadly, Kennedy died young, so only the earlier Altan albums feature him. That track is from their album Harvest Storm

If you want to explore another great trad Irish flautist, try Matt Molloy, of Chieftains fame. He covers all moods.

For some less obvious prog flute, Pete Sinfield's (Crimson, ELP, etc.) solo album Still has the lovely track "The Piper." Very nice, if you can find it! Thumbs Up

I love the sound of a nicely-played flute -- very stirring and evocative! Smile

"And, has thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!'
He chortled in his joy.

Nik Turner's "Xitintoday". Very different from the stuff he does with Hawkwind. You can't get more ethereal than that album. I sent you YouTube links to all nine tracks.

^ I have them, thanks for the mention. What I remember from those are the ethnic beats and spacey synths... I need to give them a new listen.

It seems like Ex-Wise Heads free album had a bunch of flute on it and it was pretty gentle... I'll have to find that again.  It's Colin Edwin and the flautist from Henry Cow I believe.

Have you tried Yatha Sidhra's album A Meditation Mass?  The flute on that one really floats along.

what comes to mind is the airy intro of Ladytron by RM which is quite ethereal
this song is quite moody

I'm looking for flute music, please post anything that's as gentle, ethereal and spacey as possible. Not the bombastic stuff a la Jethro Tull or Focus and neither the energetic stuff a la Hawkwind or Hidria Spacefolk or ethnic music.

Here are some references:

Luup:

The new Fripp & Travis CD is also right on my alley, but there's no sample of it on the internet.

Also, I have a CD with 16th century music for flute, but I can't seem to find it so I upload you guys some tracks or to search for the authors. Mozart also has a flute concert, and it's wonderful.

THANKS!
