That... was not a good list. And they weren't in order either. They just picked 10 random concept albums or at least the most famous (not the best) and put random numbers from 1 - 10 in front of them.

My thoughts are that CTTE is not a concept album anyway. But then again neither is 2112, Sgt Pepper or Tommy.

It definitely is? My opinion is completely without value? A very loose sort of concept I suppose.

Well i apologize. To me personally, the album is without a doubt a concept album. About the "dark side" of a life. Money/ greed, age, insanity. It begins with a heart beat, and the first track is "breathe" as in the human is born. Everything needed to be said about the idea of the album is said in the next few tracks (which just an assumption would be the "life" of the human) and it ends with a heartbeat as they die. |

American Idiot? i am no green day fan but i am 100% positive that this isn't even close to being a concept album. Having had the misfortune of hearing 3 or 4 of the numerous singles on that album none of them bare any conceivable relation to each other.
And agreed Sgt. Pepper is not a concept album either

Hmm....I always considered CTTE a "concept" album, considering its lack of single, winding theme, and unifying beginning & ending! The web is full of opinions for/against, this is a decent "for":
------ Close to the Edge is a concept album and the title
drack draws inspiration from Hermann Hesse's book Siddartha. According
to this interpretation, the song tracks Hesse's character who is close
to the edge of a river which is symbolic of life and being close to the
past lifetimes of one's soul. Close to the edge of this river, the
character has a spiritual awakening. This theme of spiritual awakening,
spring, rebirth, rivers, valleys seeps through the album. For example,
the title track is birthed out of sounds of birds and running water and
fades out much the same way. Read more: http://www.musicbanter.com/prog-psychedelic-rock/51040-yes-close-edge-1972-a.html#ixzz1ADgIMwKj |

Most of those albums don't even have solid concepts. Let alone any concept.

Kind of a crap list.
The Lamb, in my opinion, should be there.
Misplaced Childhood should be, too.

Sgt. Pepper is definitely proto-conceptual and needs to be in any serious concept albums top.

On a side note, I suspect John's socks are starting to get rather smelly by now. But to give him credit, at least he hasn't broken his toes off yet. I'll be waiting and watching.
![]() I'm guessing there are pretty much no albums on the list that don't have someone playing a Gibson guitar. Edited by Slartibartfast - January 05 2011 at 21:41 |

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

In that case it means I have completely different reasons to dislike it: 1) it doesn't make clear what's the criteria of judgement. Is it how achieved is the concept? In that case, there are other more achieved concept albums that should be on top, like The Wall. Or is it how good are the albums? In that case, putting DSOTM and Sgt. Pepper so low is ridiculous. 2) the selections does not make any sense overall. It looks like albums from different worlds, representing the tastes of more very different people who each chose two or three albums without consulting with each other. I like my lists to have a concept of their own, some unifying intentions or whatever. |
