Topic: Things you're really, really into. (not music) Posted: January 03 2011 at 22:31 |
Yeah we all like music and instruments, and things like that.
What do you really like, maybe to the point of fanboyism? Could be anything really.
For me, it's basically all of Joss Whedon's TV shows (Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Dollhouse). I've seen every episode of all those shows and have read every issue of the Buffy Season 8 comics, and getting into the comics for the other series. I've seen Dr. Horrible but I don't really like Neil Patrick Harris, so ehn.
(also the show Supernatural)
Anyone else wanna offer up something?

The biggest one for me is anything Douglas Adams. I've read all the Hitchhiker's Guide books countless times, same goes for the Dirk Gently books. I tracked down a copy of Last Chance to See, enjoyed it, and found Starship Titanic (his book written by Terry Jones from Monty Python). Really though, Hitchhiker's Guide is my main attraction - I've seen/heard/read/played every adaptation of it I've heard of - first the books, then the 1981 miniseries, then the radio series, then the movie, then the video game, then the comics...plus I own ~10-15 Hitchhiker's Guide themed shirts.
Runner up would probably be Futurama. I have the first four seasons and all the movies on DVD, but I haven't seen barely any of the new season (didn't have Comedy Central until recently).

Pro wrestling. I've been a fan since I was 5 years old and I'm not going to stop. Dozens of videos and DVDs, many of which are from Japan (and no, I don't understand Japanese) and several I haven't had the time to watch yet.
Yes, I know it's fake.
I can watch it because I find it entertaining. It's martial arts, performance art and drama mixed into one.
Yes, I still find it entertaining.
All the reasons that all of you scoff is why I tell people I collect porn. It's just easier that way.

Movies a lot.
Shooting. Rifles, shotgun, pistol. I do competition trap shooting. And I'm really big into airsoft.
I'm also an avid fan of animation, animated shows/movies and making stop-action animation.

You know, I just watched the pilot for Firefly on Netflix. It was pretty good, and I like the idea of a space western, although some of the dialogue was less than good. I think people only got obsessive about talking about it being so so good because it got screwed by Fox. I can't help but over think the premise of the giant solar system being successfully terraformed and the silliness of the Reavers. However, I watched the fourth episode of Dollhouse (and yes, I knew what was going on on, I read about it beforehand) because the internet said it was turning around and it was still so bad. There was even a comic about.
Anyway, I think I'm biologically incapable of being a fanboy of anything. I certainly do like things, I even like a few things a lot, but I almost always find it impossible to be swept up in irrational exuberance. It's very difficult for me to disengage the analytical side of my brain that tries to poke holes in everything people say or do.

Art. Reading about it (less and less so as my attention span is diminishing), going to see exhibitions, visiting museums, talking about it, etc. Even collecting it. Initially, I chose it as a career option too, but somehow circumstances have alligned themselves in a way that made me fail big time.
I was into movies in a dedicated way some time ago, but since I've been with my girlfriend I gave up on following what's new, we pretty much only watch the classics.

I'm not sure why this made me so angry. If I'm being honest, I love the internet more than anything else in my life, but that's awfully depressing to admit. :(

Anorak on , i am into Scientific documentaries and Astronomy, British Naval History esp. C18th and C19th, British & Commonwealth stamps, Artists' and British counties postcards from the early 1900's and cars/commercial vehicles from the 1940/50's, 60's and some from the 70's.
As i am not a millionaire i could not possibly collect these cars, but would if i could and start my own Classic car living museum, though my 1/43 diecast collection will do for now
I have a model of every car i have owned and driven over the years, 15 to date, this one was my first car from 1970, a 1949 MM...

sex, food, and politics. None of these should be mixed together though. If I were to pick out something that's considered a typical guy thing that I absolutely not into, that would be sports. It's not that I hate sports as much as it is an utter indifference. Politics has totally taken over the sports center of my brain.

Beer, probably. And maybe a little bit of Linux and Android and some other geeky stuff like that.
I'm still shocked that Henry posted Penny Arcade.

All the research I did on Satan cult killings in my hometown which took place between 71' and 74'. Way before the "Satanic Panic' scare in the 80's. Actually that's being pretty specific and making a reference to one kind of worship because there were other groups like the "Watchtower Society" who used occult practices. It hurt me personally when my schoolmates were institutionalized or murdered so I went on a full scale investigation into their deaths. I discovered hidden or forgotten evidence of a prominet leader whose group brainwashed my friends. I disguised myself and posed under a different name conducting interviews in person and by phone on and off, for many years in between my travels in the music business. When I retired, I investigated even further. I grew up around this environment and needed to resolve the mystery for myself and my own sanity.
