It is very hard for me to get Amon Duul II music. But the one I have is only Yeti. I've heard some of Tanz Der Lemmings, although it is cool, it kind of has that Thick as a Brick sound, which was cool but does not represent the Yeti Amon Duul. My vote is unfair now, but Yeti is an awesome album. It ranks up with my top 5 Krautrock albums, and recently, I've been REALLY fond of their improv side of the album. Yeti is my favorite track.

From the votes it looks like I will have to get Yeti. |
I much prefer Wolf City, for its continuity ... although the CD (Wolf City) has the order reversed from the LP, and somehow it doesn't sound as good.
Listening to this band from the beginning is what gives it away ... Amon Duul 1, is just a bunch of non stop jams and trips ... everyone is stoned and that's that. There is no rhyme or reason, or music, so to speak. It does have funny stuff in a couple of spots but nothing major.
When listening to PD, the first album, the long cut is almost making fun of everyone being stoned (at the start), and then directing the piece of music into a party and having fun ... which none of the AD1 albums did ... they just went on and on and on and on ... sort of searching for a nirvana in music, sound or just playing. I guess you could easily say ... now, that's a commune! ... sound familiar for you Grateful Dead-heads?
PD, is probably the first album to show that the commune thing is falling apart and that the once romantic notions around them were full of it, and that in the end it was just an excuse to get laid. A couple of films recently deal with that, including the one about the famous model with the Rolling Stones. Guru Guru was also known to have been a part of these and involved in many demonstrations, but doing it with music and having fun -- the culmination of which ends in Tango Fango in the last song satirising the music on the other side of the wall!
Yeti, is a departure from the first album. It is more focused on the music ... so let's say that the band decided that they really wanted to be a band, instead of just a commune that had some music, let's say ... and the result is? ... yeah ... you jam right up to the top. You create a few pieces, and the title one is the important one. And the cover/concept of the album is even more important ... you harvest the "energy" ... and that they do extremely well!
It's impossible to describe "Yeti", the title piece. You just about have to close your eyes and let it fly. It's one of the most electric and far out trips for me, and it fits with the best Science Fiction has to offer.
The other album had "Soap Shop Rock", many parts of which have since appeared in other albums in bits and pieces. In one piece, it is a wonderful listen, but very difficult to figure out ... what is it all about ... what do the lyrics mean ... what is this trip about ... and in between you get some amazing instrumentation and then vocals that even seem to either make fun of classical music, or take it for a ride! ... it is, in many ways, quite Wagnerian in its presentation and continuity. Long, strong, hard ... and non stop!
But the music flow and continuity is not like a "song" ... and as such this is something that is often not enjoyed in some music circles and is also considered "weird".
There was a massive discussion in a magazine about this music I wrote some articles for 30 years ago, that it was drug music ... but I have to tell you that I enjoy it a heck of a lot more now, than I even did then ... although you can take that 2nd cut in Wolf City (the eastern music one), and blow my smithereens out with it! It's a lot more than just trip music ... it's solid work.

It might be easier to listen to, since it is something that you close your eyes and just go with ... AD2, is almost exclusively not about that, and the lyrics got pointed and very powerful. Mozambique (Vive La Trance) has lyrics that are down right vicious. Apocaliptyc Bore is almost too sci-fi a la grok style ... difficult to let go and figure out ... but we know one thing ... after the jam is over ... the AD2 that we knew ... is over.
AD1, did not "write" anything. They just played! And all we're hearing is the jams, and nothing else. And I'm not sure that the listing of musicians is even correct or proper since one is hearing a lot more than the folks listed!
I suppose that one could say, it had its time, it had its place. I will never say it is not "good" ... it's an enjoyable listen ... but it is showing its time and place ... and I am not sure that it has stood up very well otherwise as "music" ... it is an "experience" ... and that is not always "music". That's my best way to explain and express it.

More than half of "Dance of the Lemmings" is an improv!
And I need to get some dehypnotized toothpaste!

No, it's not "easier to listen to," it's just strictly and firmly far better music. Furthermore, you are henceforth barred from use of ellipses in my presence.

The only one you are missing is "Utopia" ... which is done along with the band Embryo. Also ... you should really listen to Nada Moonshine # ... it's very nice and it has very good things in it.
Must gets, also include Lothar Meid's solo album 18 Karat Gold - All Bums ... and then we can play "If my guru would know" for Dean a few times!
Now if I can get the band to get me a poster of the Wolf City cover, I can die happy!

You know, when one writes a poem, one just writes and does not worry about the ... ellipses!
It's about the "language" and HOW one is trying to say it, albeit I wonder if you are suggesting that can not be done in English?

Poems shouldn't have ... ellipses! in them, except in the rarest of cases. I also sincerely hope you are not comparing your ramblings to poetry.

Have heard most but not everything on the list. I'd give my nod to Yeti if they'd Leti vote.
Close seconds to Vive la Trance and Hijack - very different from the earlier albums, yet very good nonetheless. Too bad so many folks dis these because they're different, but they're quite creative and fun nonetheless.

I love all of their albums up to Made in Germany - which I think gets too much flack for not sounding more out there or more like the old albums. They were just doing something different thatīs all... I voted for Yeti, because of its beautiful way of knitting the musicians together into one giant metaphysical ball of yarn - individually expressing themselves, but somehow coming together in that special zone, which every progressive musician should stride for - where the music almost creates itself, and you are reduced to an instrument yourself and the music flows natural like a river and takes new form.

Made In Germany is their masterpiece. Hijack is one of my faves. Carnival In Babylon as well. Renate added a dimension to the band that was lost after she left.
I just googled Made In Germany and a found a downloading site that is using my Made In Germany review from 2004.

Weird that you should prophecy what poetry is, when I have over 400 poems and for almost ten years I was one of the editors of one of the Internet's best known poetry magazine ... but you have the "in" on what poetry is, so we don't need to discuss this!
And for the record, I am a writer, and poetry is a part of it. Just not the style you like!

Nice. Very well said and superbly written.
So very true ... so very true what you said, and it was almost the exact thing I wanted to say.
