If you're younger than 18

in my prog journey i have had long fazes where my attitude to listening has been [insert Walter qoute here] but now i tend to base my listening on hearing anything i haven't heard yet, this is still usually 70's stuff but i do now look for highly rated albums from any decade beyond and before and usually from any country but Britain considering my past listening habits.

I am way too old to be here in this thread but it makes me feel younger every time.

Metallica's black album put me off them for years. 27-30: Missed the aggression of Death Metal and the like. Discovered Meshuggah! Maintained my love for classic prog, discovered Magma. 31-now: The internet has exposed me to so many new things either brand new or older stuff that did not get enough distribution in my youth. I listen to just about all styles, but I'm fairly particular about what I listen to within a genre. I think if I had internet in my teens my musical exposure would have been much different and I would have skipped a lot of more 'mainstream' including the better known prog and progmetal. Had I known about Cynic, Atheist, Meshuggah etc. earlier, Dream Theater would have never made it to my collection. So, obviously music has changed since my teens, but how we are exposed to it has changed as well.

Eh, I'm 15 and my favorite bands are Rush, Yes, King Crimson, and Camel.

I'm 20 and Genesis is my favorite band. Even as a high schooler I was crazy about Genesis, Yes, Rush, and Visible Wind. My mom is a big-time prog head and had me listening to Prog before I could even understand words.

I'm 21 now. But when I was a teenager I used to listen to prog rock and metal, as I do now... But Prog metal wasn't a big deal for me, with the exception of Opeth, a band I discovered like 6 years ago. I used to listen to DT from time to time back then, but "prog metal" for me was too similar to power metal... a genre I don't like.  Bands like Pain of Salvation, Fates Warning,. Ayreon and Symphony X are somewhat new for me... I discovered them like 2 years ago, and I like them, but I think I'll always prefer classic prog rock to prog metal. I've tried, but I can't like Riverside. In fact, I think they're kinda overrated...

And the fun fact is that most of the prog metalheads could be easily the fathers of all the younger people who have posted here

I'm 22 and this and NWOBHM is the only metal I like.
Hail magma the first and best Death Metal band!


In my book 99.5% of Prog-metal is just Metal with prog alike effects attached to it's sound.
