FYI, to a few comments above, while the music is "psychedelic" in part, the band is quite sober and drug-free. No small children were sacrificed to cthulhu during recordings either. :)

Pat & Jean, as far as I know, Red Masque is a 00's band, not a 90's band (debut dates from 2002)

Yeah, everyone has their own taste. Some experimental music you can tell that the people making it or liking it probably smoke a lot of herb. I'm not saying this band does that. But it kind of pigeonholes certain types of music. You begin to realize the more difficult music (say Hackett-era Genesis) is the product of very exceptional people that probably spent a lot of time sober. Or, stuff like John Coltrane, had an intense spiritual path. So, you find out a lot about different types of music, and then certain music scares people off after a while. Some music sounds great to people who may be young and haven't really lived through a lot of life, and seen the folly of liking some kinds of things, but will learn by experience, hopefully, the folly of certain ways. Again, that does not refer to this band. I'm not being sarcastic when I say that. I played a little bit of the band and just did not feel a draw. |

I wouldn't consider them among the best bands from the 90s, but they are very enjoyable. I've seen them live a few times. They post here pretty often. Thanks for posting this topic. I just wanted to let you know we have a new website now at www.theredmasque.com. if anybody is interested in finding out more about the band, please feel free to stop by. We have videos and free downloads available (with more to be posted in the coming months). We have revamped the band's lineup in this past year and resolved our practice space situation (which was hampering the band) and I think some of you will be pleasantly surprised at the results. But you have to accept the fact there are some great names in the 90's and 00's that will simply stay unknown - Big Block 454, Coma Stereo, Illachime Quartet, Rouge Ciel, and many others. |

I find them a lot better than those too, but PT and Opeth aren't my bag. The Red Masque is a good band, and I like the music, but maybe I didn't give it enough of a chance to really impress me. There's so much good music out there that is not generally popular or is barely known in progressive rock circles.

well, I find them a lot better than celebrities like Opeth or Porcupine Tree. they are a band that manage to capture the spirit of the 70s without sounding outdated. Friede and I have been fans ever since hearing a feature on them on an internet radio show

I know The Red Masque, but never really got into the music. I would have liked Dagmar Krause lending vocals to it. I find the music a bit sloppy, but good band.

I'm kind of in the same boat as Kotro. I downloaded something from their website, and listened to a couple songs on their myspace. Didn't really seem like my kinda thing. Very meandering, seemed a bit pointless at spots. Her voice is an issue as well...too much of it, and it doesn't really fit the music IMVHO.
With those issues I've never been willing to spring for a real album.

I think any lover of VdGG should love The Red Masque too. there clearly is an influence (which the band gladly acknowledge), but they have developed their own thing. influences of Magma can also be heard (the heavy bass!), and lot of other influences too. they mixed a really good cocktail from it

I know Lynette has an account here. nevertheless, they by far don't get the attention they deserve at all. I know them, I heard their EP and the first album. Very good band indeed. Assaf has been promoting them in the past, and when Lynnette (who has a PA account) joins with a post/thread there are always responses
