For anyone who has not given a listen to In Held Twas In I, from Shine On Brightly, you will probably want to do so fairly soon. Remarkable music, to this day.

I think the greatest problem of Procol Harum is that their most popular song are widely more well know than the band in it-self.
Song as "a whiter shade of pale" or "Salty Dog" are very popular among the not prog public, but how many of them know the band and above all a masterpiece such as "In Held Twas in I" |

I've been obsessively spinning my vinyl of A Salty Dog for several weeks now. Just a wonderful album, can't entirely express how much I love it. As for their greater discography, I haven't moved beyond Home just yet. I was taken aback by the (slightly more) rudimentary keyboard lines, and it has yet to grow on me fully. However, good albums by good bands are like moss: they gradually creep over you, until you find yourself quite green and fuzzy and entranced. Looking forward to the moment I put on Home and subsequently feel my jaw plummet.

I like Procol a lot, and I grew up listening to them. For the last few years Grand Hotel has grown into my favorite Procol album. Maybe not as groundbreaking new as the earlier studio albums, but the sound and the songs just take me away.

I was a Procoholic when all their albums were released the first time.
They were and are the finest 'prog' band ever assembled, and have stood the test of time, the only test that matters. |

I think that the mood of music by Procol Harum is unique and you could find it on each album though the problem is that strong songs could be there hand by hand with a weak ones. I like the sprit of their music. I saw Procol Harum live in Moscow in 2001 (they performed in Kremlin Concert Hall).
Gary was not in his best form but the band performed great.
I'm rarely listening to the first album cause I remember the music too well.
My favourite one - "Exotic Birds and Fruits"
The last studio album from 2003 sounded half done for me and was a little disillusion, but I founded that I missed "The Prodigal Stranger" (1991) and bought CD only this year. And the album was not bad. The spirit of Procol Harum is here. Edited by Serge Lenkoff - June 06 2011 at 13:35 |

the opening track is also something magic (pun intended, and the song before the suite is also very spacy and adventourus (if my memory is correct) this song is wonderfull I also think Procol Harum is borderlined Eclectic Prog. |

Just listening to Home, for probably the 200th time.
Who writes songs like this today? They are like old friends. I can barely remember the work of even the bands I like which have come over the last 20+ years. Creeping old age, or more than that? |

Well, aren't you the clever one. Anyway, I thought it interesting how Gary Brooker showed up in the 1996 film Evita. He sounded as good as ever in that one.

Classical band, it's no doubt. I listened them when I was a schoolboy. And it was a great.

This is really a great band. Wonderful music.
Their only weak point is Procol's Ninth.
