Topic: 2112 vs. Tarkus Posted: August 10 2011 at 22:15 |
Well, here it is. The 2 classic "superb side A but so-so side B" albums going head to head. I believe both have similar ratings, in the low 4 star range, so it'll make it somewhat more interesting.
Which do you prefer? (Referring to the albums, not just the songs.)
I vote 2112.

I never loved either. I never loved side one of either. In fact, I'd almost place them on totally equal grounds in my head. I can't hardly recall any of the songs on side two of either unless I go back to them, no matter how many times I listen. I suppose that 2112 is easier for me to stomach because I kinda like Passage to Bangkok and the first five or six minutes of the epic.

Tarkus is one of my favourite songs of all time. Especially the live version on Welcome Back... The first two parts are the only thing good about 2112. They are amazing though, and pretty much the best thing Rush ever did imo

I'm so mad that you enjoy a certain combination of noises that I don't

Tarkus easily. The title track is ELP's greatest work. 2112 is okay, but nowhere near their other albums. Had this been Tarkus vs. Hemispheres, then I would have voted Rush, a band I love far more than ELP anyway.

^ Well, I went with the 2 most talked about "great side A, not so great side B" albums to see which one comes out on top. Hemispheres is pretty strong on both side, IMO.
Hemispheres is definitely in my top 3 Rush albums. And I always thought 2112's B-side to be far more interesting and enjoyable than Tarkus'.

| I gave Tarkus 5 stars on the basis of the title track alone- I regard it that highly (even though the second half is inconsistent). 2112 as a whole (including the title track) is hit or miss for me, so I gave it just 3 stars.

I have to go with Tarkus on this one. It was a tough call as Rush is my favorite band, but Tarkus is just a better song for me.

2112 for me.
The only track on the whole that im iffy about is Something For Nothing. Never been a keen ELP fan, though i love their debut.

ELP are my favourite band with Rush not far behind. Both the title tracks are better in their live versions imo. The Welcome Back My Friends version has the extended Aquarkus section with Emerson going to town on the moog ensemble. Great fun. I love the version of 2112 on Different Stages which is more powerfull and you get the audience participation on Overture which lifts it another notch. Voted for Tarkus only because its such an original and inventive peice

I am going for Tarkus, and gave it my vote. There is so much power and passion in that piece, and it is worth the price of the whole album. 2112 has the better storyline though, but then this is a music site and not a literary one, isn't it?

Tarkus. The B-side of 2112 may be a bit less 'so-so', but the epic on Tarkus is far more superb.

Tarkus. The title track is among ELP's best if not best. Not crazy about the rest of the album, though. 2112 is good, but not great. Bits of the title track are a bit dull and not nearly as interesting as Tarkus.

Which has no B side? Tarkus sure does and for anyone to suggest its no good is crazy. Listen to "time and a place" or "Bitches Crystal"
