Just as long as your explanation isn't Misunderstanding is best song Genesis ever did.

So hard to pick one. Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot are probably the best

(Genesis, the most discussed artist on this forum...) But to answer the original question: Foxtrot. I am too tired to explain, why. Ask Ivan if in doubt.

The Lamb … for me, though I still would give five stars to Foxtrot and Selling England … Nursery Cryme is also very close, and I love Trespass, A Trick … and Wind and Wuthering as well. Four stars, though Your Own Special Way may be the most boring song they ever made. Sorry Mike, at least Deep in the Motherlode is one of my favourites from And Then They Were Three.

A Trick of the Tail is my overall favourite Genesis album.
It was Dance on a Volcano that really got me into the band. I love everything about the album from the feel to the production and album artwork. I don't think it would have been any better had Gabriel song on the album.
A close second would probably be Foxtrot, which is certainly my favourite Gabriel era album.
With regards to Duke, I think it's a fantastic album. There's a few week tracks, which I tend to skip, like Misunderstanding, but it also has some of my top Genesis tunes; Turn it on Again and Dukes Travels.

Foxtrot and Trespass are my faves of the early 70s and
Trick and Wuthering my faves of the late 70s
Well they are my fave 4 genesis albums overall.
The weakest is Nursery crymes. Only has 3 cool tunes, the rest is B-C grade prog including Musical box. Amatuer compositions and amatuer recording

SEBTP for me, closely followed by Trick of the Tail and Wind & Wuthering. Seconds Out is the perfect album to buy for beginners to Genesis

I only own Foxtrot, Selling England..., and And then there were Three. I think I prefer Foxtrot to SEBTP because Supper's Ready is a true masterpiece in my mind, even with the slightly boring Apocalypse section, and the second side of SEBTP isn't nearly as good in my ear. Side 2 of Foxtrot is comparable to Selling's Side 1, whereas Foxtrot's Side 1 is much stronger than Selling's side 2. I do know I need to buy more Genesis! I'm too busy buying modern stuff!!

Very difficult to choose a clear favourite from Charterhouse's finest as for me, they have made several excellent albums but not trumped us with a single 5 sparklies full house hand to date.
Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway and Trick of the Tail are pretty much indispensable Genesis fare and uniformly strong throughout.

1. Selling England by the Pound 2. Foxtrot 3. Nursery Cryme 4. Trespass 5. The Lamb 6. A Trick of the Tail 7. Duke 8. Wind and Wuthering My number 1 is pretty much set in stone but numbers 2-6 change about every month I also enjoy Invisible Touch and From Genesis to Revelation from time to time, so these would probably be my numbers 9 and 10, respectively.
