Influenced by Bauhaus maybe, there is a lot of music in the 70s and a lot of different influences. I was thinking about Sufjan Stevens Illanoise being prog while listening to it yesterday .?

I hope that was said in jest. Totally with you on the notion that Radiohead has no old prog influences that are apparent there. If the music doesn't resemble the genre in which it allegedly belongs, it doesn't belong, it is something different. Which leads us back to that whole prog vs progressive argument which has been flogged like a dead horse. Edited by Slartibartfast - January 27 2012 at 14:55 |

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Opeth has indeed tons in common with the 70s. They're actually paying tribute to their roots with their new album. Don't get fooled by growling vocals. |

Up to OK Computer, the only prog rock band whose influence I can hear in Radiohead is Pink Floyd. But I do hear the influence of Beatles, Nick Drake and some other rock from the 60s and 70s. Kid A is influenced by krautrock, Kraftwerk, etc.

I can't help but think the question superficially interesting but deeply flawed: Can you make an omelette without using eggs? Slarti's correct, this boils down to the increasingly inclusive nature of the site re Prog v progressive. That's not necessarily a bad thing but there comes a point where those who proclaim such bands exist that fit The Jester's description, start to resemble vegans letting rip eggy farts i.e. disingenuous |

^^ Symphonic prog is itself a 70s genre so technically, it doesn't sound very plausible that there could be modern symph prog with NO 70s influence. It may not be PROMINENTLY based on 70s prog or sound like an imitation but it would have to have some 70s symph prog influence, else what is it that makes it symph prog at all? There is prog without influence of 70s symph prog or the so called classic prog but you'll usually find that such music is influenced by Krautrock, electronic prog or something from the ARZ basket. If it has no 60s or 70s influence at all in the strict sense of the word, it can't be ROCK in the first place.

Yeah I do see the similarities of those two bands with 70s now that I think of it. Sweet. What about Cynic though?

Cynic, as in the metal band? Just read their bio, and you'll find the names of Allan Holdsworth and Frank Zappa. Prog, and 70's.
As for Radiohead: in the beginning their influences came from post punk and new wave, but bands like Can and Neu! were added over time. Don't forget that bands included in the archives as prog or prog related may not include prog influences in all of their albums. With Radiohead, the prog influences came later in their career, while other bands (Genesis being the classic example) moved away from 70's prog.

Radiohead is a really great answer! And I didn't mean prog with no influences I meant with no influence of old prog. And any band who are influenced by modern prog are good answers too since it's not a direct link.

Have you even read what was posted here after Radiohead was suggested? If you took some time, you might find that the band Can and Neu! that I mentioned are both prog, and pre-date Genesis and Yes by a hair, and that we have no (sub)genre old prog defined here.
Read what I wrote about Cynic, dear chap. Any influence by modern prog indirectly will lead you to older prog. Any musician that plays in the bands included in our archives will be able to tell you that they were influenced by the music they heard during their youth, and that later on they discovered more music, different styles and genres - and that in the end, these influences show in their music. You are on a quest that will not bring you the answer you are looking for. I hope your previous post was the result of selective reading, not cluelessness.

Bands wear their influences on their sleeves in the songs they choose to cover, Radiohead & Thom Yorke have covered Pink Floyd (Prog Psyche/Space), Tim Buckley (Prog Folk) and Can (Krautrock).

Can any new band get anything right any more without sounding too much or too little like some other point in the entire history of music? Seriously, guys. |

Noone said they couldn't, Mr. Lebowski. There's quite a bit of music out there that gets it right, without sounding too little or too much like something else - that's not the point here.

I only wanted to know for my own personal general culture of progressive rock.

Errrm.... your 'own personal general culture' - that is self contradictory in multiple ways. Try some other words, because I don't get what you are trying to say here.

It's for me to get informed. (Sorry, I'm not an anglophone so I get some problems with my english... It's good to tell me sometimes because I don't always use the good words to say what I want to say.) |

I just did. Now that you got informed, could you summarize what you learned?
Sorry, that's the teacher in me speaking...
