Topic: Your Choice in Consistency Posted: February 26 2012 at 18:05 |
Which artist/band/ensemble (or multiples of any of the previous) do you consider to have a consistently strong output in terms of official, perhaps including unofficial, releases?
My nomination, only one springs to mind for me, is Riverside.
Whichever record of theirs I listen to, I am never disappointed. Every other band for me has a track or album that comes on and I think 'meh, next.' I could happily listen to the entire Riverside discography without skipping a single track.
Who would yours be?

Tool. Tool. Tool. Beardfish. All of my favorite bands seem to be the opposite, for example, Rush has some amazing tunes, but a ton of filler...

So far Major Parkinson have been pretty consistent, but they've only got two albums thus far. Beardfish come to mind next, although I still haven't heard their first 2. Surprisingly, I can't think of anyone else.

Well there a lot of new bands with a small amount of work that I considered flawless for example Beardfish, Anekdoten, Anglagard, Wobbler and Toby Driver's works. But if I look for bands that are 40 years old the first to come in my mind is King Crimson, there not a lot of band with that much consistency around

On the contrary, I think Rush epitomizes consistency. I can't think of any album besides a couple of the first three which I would rate less than four stars. I can't think of a whole lot of others; maybe Iona? And I concur with Triceratopsoil about Toby Driver (all of his stuff I've heard, anyway).

There was a similar thread in 2010, I think: "Bands that can do no wrong".

The only thing I've heard by PT that is obviously below 4 stars is Voyage 34.

I would say Rush. I don't think they've done anything under a three star album, and I would dispute the idea that they have produced loads of 'filler' I guess it depends on how you define 'filler' For me filler is something that is used instead of actual composed music, to either pad an album out, or to create an atmosphere, and then sustain the atmosphere, for longer than is necessary. To be honest I can't think of one example when Rush have ever done this.

I think the more albums an artist does the less likely there will be consistency and I don't have a problem with that. I think Ozric Tentacles is fairly consistent but they've done a lot of albums and I don't need every one.
