Hey all, I have a few names that I feel may be worth a look for the Jazz Rock/ Fusion category.

1) Spectrum Road.

Consisting of Vernon Reid (guitars), Jack Bruce (bass), Cindy Blackman (drums) and John Medeski (keyboards) Spectrum Road is a fusion supergroup who have just released their self-titled debut. http://jazztimes.com/articles/30398-spectrum-road-spectrum-road <--- explains the sound of the album fairly well.

Consisting of high energy, extremely diverse music Spectrum Road is definately a band worthy of PA

2) Dave Weckl

Dave Weckl's music is the embodyment of fusion in many ways and I'm surprised to find that he isn't already on the site. He has released four solo records and seven more with his band. All of his music (that I have heard) I would classify as straight unaltered fusion (pretending fusion was straight to begin with).

http://grooveshark.com/#!/s/Heads+Up/2r0oxz?src=5 (Heads up: the second song off of 'Heads Up')

http://grooveshark.com/#!/s/Tower+99/147p7U?src=5 (This song is made by the Dave Weckl band and is the final song off their second album 'Synergy').

3) Joel Hoekstra

Joel Hoeksra's music is interesting to say the least, I am not fully sure if this constitute's purely as fusion though it draws on it heavily as a genre. (see this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjK_FwfPJ4Y (this is song 8 off his album 'The Moon is Falling')). Joel Hoekstra is the guitarist and uses various backing musicians on his three cd's 'Undefined', 'The Sky is Falling' and '13 Acoustic Songs'.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3ZRiGdxwuc&feature=relmfu (Slide Tune: The 10th song off his first album 'Undefined').

As the name may suggest, '13 Acoustic Songs' showcases Joel at his softer side.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6KZcylT50M&feature=relmfu (This song, Twigs, is a good example of the sound in this album compared to previous ones).

Musicians Joel uses includes:
  • Tim Lefebvre (Rudder, Wayne Krantz)-bass
  • Nir Z (John Mayer, Genesis)-percussion
  • Daniel Adair (Nickelback)-percussion
  • Joel Rosenblatt (Spyro Gyra)-percussion
  • Rich Stitzel (Miranda Lambert)-percussion
  • Christian Cullen (Night Ranger)-keys
  • Rob Clores (The Black Crowes)-keys
  • Dave Eggar (Michael Brecker, Evanescence)-cello
  • Matt Beck (Matchbox 20)-accordion
  • Although it is surprising to see many softer, pho-alternative pop bands in there the album '13 Softer songs'... I mean Acoustic... is a testament to songwriting over technicality by Joel.

Finally, the last band I want to show you...
    4)Tohpati Bertiga

Unfortunately, there is no easy place to find Tohpati's music online, there is a Myspace page (http://www.myspace.com/tohpatibertiga) where you can hear some of the music, though it isn't of the best quality. You can also find higher quality samples(as well as all of the band's information) here, http://www.moonjune.com/catalog/045_TOHPATI-BERTIGA_Riot_MJR045/.

Tohpati Bertiga's album Riot is wonderfully ambitious and showcases him as a master of his instrument.

I want to thank you for you consideration on these artists and would love to see them on PA soon. :)

    ~Mike

I don't know #1 and 3, but I doubt Dave Weckl or Dave Weckl Band will be added, as his brand of fusion is not necessarily progressive.

You may not know about this site's associated jazz site, jazzmusicarchives.com but we just added Hoekstra, the other three were already there. thanks for the suggestion.

Spectrum Road is currently under eval. I'll take a look at the other ones now, but I agree with Mike on Dave Weckl. One of my favorite jazz drummers, but not fit for PA.

Joel Koekstra has no place here. It's not even fusion to be honest. Nice "light" Satriani-esque instrumental rock with a sprig of jazz, but not much else. The acoustic stuff is nice as I have a soft spot for that kind of stuff, but it doesn't help his case.

Tohpati Bertiga is a bit of a weak case, but he has a chance at fusion. I'll alert the team.
