Topic: What do you think of side 2 of 2112? Posted: July 31 2012 at 20:59 |
I saw someone post on another site that while side one is great side two is pretty lame(not his exact words but close enough). Ok. So we all know side one is great. No, side two isn't as good as side one but I don't think it's that bad. It starts off good("passage to bangkok")and ends good("something for nothing"). In between not so much but still. It's less prog than anything off of COS so maybe that's why this person didn't like it. Who knows.

It's a mixed bag. Passage to Bangkok and Something for Nothing are awesome. Twilight Zone, Lessons and Tears are... less awesome.

I pretty much agree. I think "tears" is a pretty nice song. It might be a good song to lure your girlfriend into liking Rush. Twilight zone at least has pretty cool lyrics. Anyway, I would probably rank them like this: 1. A passage to bangkok 2. Something for nothing 3. Tears 4. Twilight Zone 5. Lessons

Well if I was going to put side one in the mix it would be: Side one(2112 suite) then my initial list of 1-5 for 2 through 6. ;)

I like the suite better, but side 2 isn't bad at all.

I feel like side 2 is good, but if the first side stood alone I would rate the album higher.

I quite like side 2; it's been a while since I've listened to it, though. A Passage to Bangkok is cool with its eastern tinge, Tears is a nice song, Twilight Zone is good but somewhat incoherent, Lessons is excellent, imo, with kind of the same vibe as Fly By Night, and Something to Nothing is a good song, but a bit simplistic (musically and lyrically) at times.

I agree with the general consensus, Passage to Bangkok is great, and Something for Nothing is pretty rockin.
Twilight Zone - my least favorite Rush song I've heard yet. It just seems awkward, and the vision that the band might have had with the concept fell flat on its face imo.

The human heart instrinsically longs for that which is true, good, and beautiful. This is why timeless music is never without these qualities.

I only like Lessons and Something for Nothing from that side. Never cared much for Bangkok, Twilight, or Tears. I guess Tears isn't too bad, just very non-Rush-like.

It's a decent, in it's own right, but this was time of evolution and change for Rush. I could definitely see those tunes being on Fly By Night, but when you've already released album prior, that features a lot of experimental elements, I just don't think it was appropriate for Rush to turn back. Through a commercial context, it definitely benefited them - probably the reason why 2112 was so commercially successful. Following after the first side though, in comparison, it has no match, in my opinion. It's got some nice tunes though - Tears, Lessons. Lessons has a great pentatonic guitar solo courtesy of Lerxst.

I think side 1 is more exciting, side 2 is also very good and I don't think there is even one bad song in it.

Companion album for Tarkus
I think both bands were hedging their bets about future direction. The success of both albums proved that going with a side long track for a side one was not only brave but smart.
Both albums have interesting tracks on side two. Both albums are good.
That said 2112 has a better side two than Tarkus. Its more consistent througout. Twilight Zone is very underated song as is Something For Nothing. Passage to Bangkok is a Rush classic. Tears I like. Lessons I can't even remember and is perhaps the only weak track but I will need to have another listen

Something For Nothing is pretty good. Twilight Zone is alright. PTB is alright as well, but not as alright as TZ. So I suppose 'meh' is my general thoughts. Of course , I'm not a Rush fan, so grain of salt.
