TOS hands down. My favourite episode was That Which Survives. The City On The Edge Of Forever never really turned my crank. Another favourite episode was Spock'.s Brain because it was so freaking dumb. It was really sixties. A bunch of dumb blondes have enough intelligence to steal the most brilliant brain in the universe. I wonder what Gloria Steinham thought about this? |

funny you mention "That Which Survives". Have not seen that in years and remembered liking it, but it gets terrible ratings. Another one like that was "Whom Gods Destroy", with Commander Garth as a lunatic running the asylum

so was "Dagger of the Mind" with Dr Adams. So good it heavily inspired an early South Park episode about a Dr Adams who ran the planetarium in South Park. Hilarious if you haven't seen it

The Original Series rules, for me. My favorite TOS episodes are Bread and Circuses, Spectre Of The Gun, All Our Yesterdays, Space Seed, Patterns Of Force, City On The Edge Of Forever,The Way To Eden, though, i can see merit in all of the TOS episodes.

Its timely to come back to this old thread cos I love Trek and only recently rewatching ALL the episodes from season 1. I saw the box set on fathers day of remastered eps, and used that as an excuse to buy the box.
I loved watching the new remastered scenes as obviously the enterprise looked fantastic in CGI, but part of me longed for the old shots of the enterprise hanging by a string with those shimmering green screen planets. The difference is rather amazing as it kind of makes Trek look modern as a whole show, not just the effects. There are no features where you can watch back all the old effects, they have simply been replaced! If you want to see the old effects you would have to look back at the eps on the old DVDs. Surely Paramount could have included a feature with the old effects so you can choose. Heres some remaster shots - worthwhile? you be the judge! (thumbnails cos otherwise thread would get too big) Guess the episodes! Old FX New FX Old New Old New Old New Old FX New FX Old eFX New FX Old FX New FX

^That kind of annoys me. People were up in arms when Lucas did the same thing with Star Wars, but no one seems to care about Trek. There's nothing wrong with the original effects. They were a product of their time and they don't make the show less enjoyable. Why do we feel the need to keep updated and redoing things? Would you go back and add sound to a Charlie Chaplin film just because we can?

^ probably the reason people aren't complaining as much is because what Lucas did to SW is nothing like what they did to Trek, which was to simply give a very careful and tasteful update, 'facelift' if you will, to an old show that deserved it (as ACR points out, it gives the show a somewhat 'modern' quality that is subtle but there) ; Lucas didn't just update a few key scenes, he forever altered an entire saga often with material and visuals that defy any sense of taste or even sanity.

Lucas certainly made sure people would forget the old saga and embrace this new enhanced version with all the CGI and that is rather a kick in the bum for all te old fans who grew up with it like me. i am glad at least the old versions were released before they fade to obscurity. In Treks case it is a simple facelift as you state, but I still long to see how it looked in the 60s and there is no way unless one buys 2 box sets. Even the Blu Ray could have added the old versions of effects but it seems once again that inorder to gain a new generation of fans we have to resort to CGI. Give e a good old clunky scene with real models anyday. However that said I still really enjoy returning to these old series and seeing brand new upgraded FX. A Youtuber dedicated a clip to them too |

It would not be so annoying if the remastered FX were an alternative! But they are not! There is no alternative with the new box sets but to see the show with all the CG!, and that includes any laser effects from phasers and other things too I noticed. I know on YT many fans have put on their own new FX and they look good but of course thats just fans having fun with a series they love, now Paramount are making it impossible to relive the good old 60s with all the clunky FX. Fan based New Fx are here a nd very good too!: |

I hope they never try to "improve" Ray Harryhausen's effects with CGI.

I loathe the revisionism of art, literature, whatever. Whether is it scrubbing old books/films for "modern sensitivities", removing cigs from old photos, or messing with Trek's cool 60s look, it is just offensive. Leave it alone.

It's also disrespectful to the original effects artists. The guy who toiled to create that model spaceship and make it look as good as he could. "Sorry, guy, your work may have entertained thousands of people back in the sixties, but it's not good enough for us now. Into the scrap heap it goes."

Eh if it looks good it looks good.
problem is, I can't think of once instance where it looks good. Maybe like one or two of the explosions in Star Wars, but then Lucas f**ked it all up.
