I got the game-beaters:

Beatles - heavy metal, proto-punk, hard rock, blues, folk, psychedelic rock, progressive, ambient, reggae, pop, britpop, avant-garde, jazz, vaudeville, baroque pop, ragtime, show-tunes, symphonic rock, rockabilly, country, motown/soul, garage rock, acid, art-rock, skiffle, world music, children's songs, lullabies, gospel, etc.

Ween - Every genre invented by man: country-western, blues, jazz, cock rock, funk, motown, pop, acid/psychedelic/space, jam, grunge, alternative rock, folk, experimental, art-rock, new wave, heavy metal, hard rock, dance pop, glam rock, world music/eastern influence, punk, hardcore, death metal, show-tunes/vaudeville, progressive rock, sea shanties, tribal, reggae, noise-rock/pop, adult contemporary, thrash, ambient, fusion, indie, R&B, bluegrass, lo-fi, latin rock (ha!), electronic rock, and all those others I forgot to mention. And they'd probably do it all in one album, too.

At the end of the day, though - aren't we makin' all this sh*t up?

I saw them live once, opening for Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. They were pretty cool.

Go back and listen to Clover Garland Island; they do some surf rock for about 10 seconds.

That album alone must have about 20 genres on it.

While not a band, David Byrne has dabbled in pretty much everything. So much so that I haven't been adventurous enough to follow all his excursions into Brazilian folk music or whatever. Smile

I think Peter Gabriel would qualify for this list, although I won't attempt to make a list of genres as I'm not all that familiar with his catalog.

I was going to say him too. Anyone who can put out Sledgehammer and then Passion has a pretty broad range.

How do you mean?

My response to the OP - PF: psych, experimental, jazz (modal and non-modal) ("The Great Gig in the Sky", "Any Colour You Like"), folk, a bit of flamenco (or whatever it is) ("Spanish Piece"), full-blown classical, ambient/electronica/minimalism/a bit of techno ("On the Run"), blues, a bit of vaudeville (or whatever it is) ("Biding My Time"), proto-metal, a bit of lightweight jazzy pop ("San Tropez"), slight hints of country here and there ("Unknown Song", "A Pillow of Winds"), gospel ("Eclipse"), musique concrete, and, of course, pop and hard rock. I'm not sure if a lot of rock music listeners worldwide actually recognized/recognize the musical diversity in the band's history.

Clivage listed here under Indo prog. Whereas most of the listed acts here play a lot of different styles, when you finally sit down and listen to them it is not that out there and preposterous. Most of the time, the genres seem to go hand in hand even with a band like SC3, but with Clivage you get Indian music mixed together with zeuhl and Shaft funk plus a whole variety of other strange spices. I heartily recommend Mixtus Orbis
