Excellent point!  I would tend to agree with you on this.  

It's interesting that, about 1970, Fripp and Peter Banks shared a flat together!  You can hear common elements in their style (jazz, use of distortion & pedals etc.).  

I don't think Banks gets the recognition he deserves, the man is amazing.
