Topic: Transatlantic and related Posted: January 17 2013 at 20:11 |
So, there's Transatlantic, and as we all know it's a supergroup made with members of some of the most succesful post 70's bands, so in the end, which is the band you like the better?

Dream Theater for me, only because they're the only band there that I've really gotten into, apart from Transatlantic.

DT for me as well, only because I have a longer history with them. I rank them as so:
Dream Theater The Flower Kings Transatlantic Neal Morse (solo) Spock's Beard Marillion (never really been able to get into them)

I'm afraid that I myself don't know all of the bands, so I'll not be voting. I did know Dream Theater first, and still love them. I have gotten several Marillion Fish era albums, studio and live, and I have gotten to love them too, though I don't know what I would think of later albums. About Transatlantic, I have really liked them a lot too, specially the Whirlwind, which I think is a better album as a whole than anything Dream Theater has done, and perhaps also better than what I have heard from Marillion (and surpassing Script is already a difficult task). As for the other two bands, I have not heard anything from them yet, but I guess I'll have to do something about that.

First vote for The Flower Kings! After that, Transatlantic, Marillion, Spock's Beard, and Dream Theater.

TRANSATLANTIC are a 'supergroup' made up of 4 talented musicians from 4 amazing bands. I am NOT a fan of Dream Theater AT ALL (talented, yes - tasteful for me, NO) I'm fond of the other 3 bands. It is so enlightening to hear Portnoy lending his talent to more 'traditional' Sympho-Prog, whereas Pete Trewavas has always been a very good bassist in Marillion (and really steps-up in Transatlantic to truly amaze me). Morse is his usual, quality, virtuosic-self, and Roine Stolt is his usual, amazing-self.

I like Marillion and DT a lot. But for me, its Transatlantic. The fusion of their talents has produced some awesome prog, especially The Whirlwind.

Indeed, I guess it is one of the few supergroup that really is a sum of it's parts, instead of just another disapontment (Asia anyone).

Marillion, followed by DT. The little I've heard from the other three haven't impressed me.
