All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

Genesis, Floyd, Rush and Blue Oyster Cult
Got the entire back catalogue of each on vinyl (plus cd for the last couple of BOC and Rush, as that was all I could get!) Beyond that, as far as bands with large bodies of work behind them, I've got most of Marillion, Styx, IQ, King's X and Kansas, with just the odd gap here and there

Gong and Hawkwind. These two bands are the epitome of space-rock, with Gong exploring the jazz rock side of it and Hawkwind the hard rock side. The two bands are befriended. Keyboarder Tim Blake played for both bands, and Hawkwind sax and flute player Nik Turner made an album with many Gong musicians on it ("Xitintoday" featuring Tim Blake, Mike Howlett, Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy).
We have all official albums of these bands and also most of the solo albums of members and other spin-off stuff. What we are missing in our collection is "Stroking the Tail of the Bird" by Daevid Allen, Gillii Smyth and Hari Williamson, "Messages", the first solo album of Hawkwind keyboarder Steve Swindells, "Obsolete" by Dashiell Hedayat (an album on which the early Gong play), "Sinister Morning" by Denny Gerard (featuring the band High Tide with Hawkwind violinist and keyboarder Simon House) and "Elegy" of the Lloyd-Langton Group. It is extremely hard to keep track of the incredible output of Daevid Allen; there are so many projects he is involved in, and we may be missing out on some of his stuff too. The regular albums of these bands alone would make quite a substantial addition to any record collection (especially with the many live recordings of both bands), but with all these spin-offs you wind up in a real maze. 1 Pink Floyd (all official releases, a number of bootlegs) especially if I include all solo releases of the band members
2 Porcupine Tree, when I include all solo releases they might beat the Floyd 3 Jean Michel Jarre would be here, even though he is included in this site, I do not consider him a prog musician at all, so it's going to be Opeth |

Ah,,, I go by albums as they are the best way to hear prog legends
Have all King Crimson, Hawkwind, Atomic Rooster, Rush, Genesis, Yes, Dream Theater, Jethro Tull, VDGG and Pink Floyd - have no idea what that means in terms of how many songs per artist - but these bands are the best for me. Perhaps most albums come from Hawkwind, King Crimson Pink Floyd and Rush...
