Hi im in need of some new music was hoping you guys can throw up some suggestions!

For a while now I've been after something thats of a similar style to 70s era Genesis.

I'm looking for stuff that has more emphasis on songwriting then virtuosity like the old Genesis stuff and that amazing atmosphere they used to envoke on songs like the lamia etc

Im currently working my way through the Anthony Phillips and Steve Hackett solo stuff.

Just wondered if there were any bands with a similar sound, I'm sure there must have been loads of genesis cloans back in the 70's but sadly I was not around in the magical time for music...

Discipline. Can't recommend them highly enough. They have a bit of a darker symphonic sound, but the emphasis is very much on songwriting. Their sense of balance and emotional delivery is practically unparalleled, even by the 70s giants. Unfolded Like Staircase and To Shatter All Accord are top 10 albums in my opinion, and I strongly recommend them to anyone who likes Gabriel-era Genesis. There's a noticeable VDGG influence in there as well, but their sound is still more symphonic that anything else. This just gives their music a more sincere edge without becoming unnecessarily cluttered or bombastic.

Fantastic!, listening to Folded Like Staircase now this is great stuff, just what I was after.

Do you know what year the album was relased?

Hmmm..there are several more obscure bands that sound a lot like Genesis but  Big Big Train reminds me of Genesis.

actually there were more Gen clones in following decades than in the '70s; k2 with the late Shaun Guerin, and Holdsworth on guitar -

So glad you like it! Smile It gets better with each new listen too. It came out in 1997, and the other one I recommended came out in 2011.

I'd highly recommend the IQ albums, "The Wake" and "Tales from the Lush Attic".  Most of their other albums are great too, but these have that early Genesis feel.  When I discovered them, I told all my prog friends I felt like I found the missing albums between "Nursery Cryme" and "Foxtrot" Wink

I'll second the recommendation for Discipline - great band.  They remind me a lot of Van der Graaf too, maybe even more so than Genesis.

One oddity you might want to try is the first album by Split Enz, called "Mental Notes" - they took a lot of cues from Genesis, especially their quirkier side.  Mental Notes is about as proggy as they got, and it's a strange, fun little album.

Funny no mention of The Watch yetShocked

Anyway, I'd strongly suggest you try out Babylon's sole album from 78:

Good call, "Mental Notes" is a hidden gem and sounds nothing like the quirky-new-wave Split Enz later became well known for.

Someone already mentioned BIG BIG TRAIN. I also recently listened to MOON SAFARI and they have the same vibe.
Cheers,

These were the 2 I was going to mention as well. I love the Babylon album. But The Watch left me displeased. I reviewed the album "Primitive" and got some very negative feedback for my negative feedback.

I'm not sure if they entirely fit the Genesis clone mold, but you should check out The Tea Club.  Their new and have their first three albums on their web site available as streaming.  http://www.theteaclub.net/discography/
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Definitely Genesis-esque. Maybe a bit too much so.
