Maybe it's me, but I hear a fair amount of overlap between National Health on the one hand and Present and Dun. Particularly the tracks Squarer of the Maud and Elephant (off different albums). Anybody else noticed this? And was Dave Stewart possibly influenced by Magma during these recordings because he is decidedly exploring darker territory much more with this band than with Khan or Hatfield and the North.

There is a lot of overlaps between the bands from the Canterbury scene and the rio and zeuhl scene. The reason is that they were touring and playing festivals together. I have noted the National Health connection. But Hatfield & The North is far more zeuhl and rio than National Health.

That's very interesting, any specific songs in mind? I shall listen to Hatfield & The North again because I felt they were on the Caravan side of Canterbury. I didn't know these bands used to tour together, but it seems fairly obvious now that you mention it , they were all from Europe, after all.

what about Gentle Giant im sure they (as wierd they were), also overlapped with the Centerbury, Rio and Zeuhl scenes. I don't know which crowd Gentle Giant hanged with, were they friends with the classic rockers ore vere they more on Centerbury and the likes

I don't hear as much overlap between Gentle Giant and Zeuhl, almost not at all in fact, but there is some overlap in places with Canterbury. On the whole, Gentle Giant evoke Jethro Tull more than other prog rock bands for me, but GG are more compositionally ambitious and more funky too. My point, by the way, was not about weirdness because all weird prog is not the same.

Check out Egg too. Not to mention Picchio Dal Pozzo whose Abbiamo Tutto album is now filling my ears with wonderful music. Those two bands were crossover bands. I would also agree with the Gentle Giant connection. The 1970s was an age of experimentation and o boy did these band experiment.

Haven't got to Picchio Dal Pozzo. Have heard Egg's Polite Force. There is dissonance and experimentation in both Egg and Gentle Giant, which is where there is a parallel between these and National Health. However, I definitely don't hear Zeuhl in either Egg or Gentle Giant. It's very interesting, some saxophone sections in Squarer of the Maud evoke Gentle Giant's Black Cat while much of the guitarwork 'evokes' Present.

Hmm...I heard Hatfield and the North's self titled again yesterday. Certainly didn't hear more zeuhl in there than Of Queues and Cures. Felt much closer to Canterbury, which is how I have always looked at both bands anyway.

I've never made a link between Canterbury and Zeuhl - I also don't believe Dave Stewart gave a toss about 'Vander and his Mekanik Kommandoh', as I read somewhere. Canterbury and RIO on the other hand...........
RIO and Zeuhl also cross paths, so..........amazing observations there.

I heard that reference too about the British health system and his glasses.
As far as crossover I also think there is a good deal of crossover between Canterbury and some RIO and Zeuhl.
