I'm surprised how Carl Palmer is always so unnoticed on this polls/threads about drummers. I'm not sure I'm up to choosing my favourites/best drummers, since I don't feel I have payed enough attention to enough of them to give an educated opinion, but Palmer strikes me among the very best... in some ways I like him even better than Bruford.

His playing on the first Crimso album is superb. imo, credit must be given to the engineer who recorded his drums. I think this is one of the first albums where each part of a drum kit (snare, bass, high hat, tom toms, cymbals) was mic'ed separately creating a new standard for listening to the drums.
Judging by the sound I think Collin's drums were mic'ed and recorded that way as well on Selling England by the Pound. I don't think they were done that way on any other Genesis with PG album, but, I'm just going by my ears.

Palmer took most of the drumming honours in seventies music paper polls. ELP are my favourite band so I could easily have voted for him but then Peart I feel always had a bit of Palmer and a bit of Bruford in his style which makes him my choice. Palmer sadly never developed beyond 1973's Brain Salad Surgery album and by the eighties was stuck in an AOR rut. Nevertheless still a hero for me and I've seen him play with Asia ,ELP and solo and is always a great showman and always great value in the live arena.

Well, in the present, I have the feeling Palmer is a much more solid drummer on Asia than Alan White is on Yes. And Bruford is retired, so he must be more solid than him too.

Alan White is an amazing and versatile drummer---he's not always flashy which can be popular on this site---his work can be subtle but swing---and his work with Levin, Torn and White showed how great he is.

I don't know, White's playing is pretty darn flashy on Sound Chaser

Palmer has always been rock solid but that was never really his' thing'. Didn't know Bruford was retired. White was never quite in the same league as Palmer, Collins, Hiseman, Peart or Bruford but nevertheless a very good drummer. In fact I prefer his drumming on Talk more than Palmers on Black Moon. Yes most recent release and Asia most recent release would be about a draw drumming wise ( a nil nil draw)

Yeah, but there have been some nice drumming from Palmer on the recent Asia live albums, while I felt somewhat underwhelmed by White's work on the last Yes live album. However, I haven't heard that White, Levin, Torn album, so that might give some different light on White's drumming nowdays.

Gave Vander another vote, though Tony Williams would have got it were he on the list. Other faves include Giulio Capiozzo of Area, Jaki Liebezeit, Pierre Moerlen, Mani Neumeier, the drummer for the explosive Disaster Area, and the explosive drummers from Spinal Tap.
