Hi! I've been listening to various kinds of extreme metal for years now, ranging from Thrash, to Death, to Black and Doom, and almost all subgenres of those kinds of music. I still very much love the music, but I've reached the point where I want more variation. And since I've always liked the more progressive bands in metal, it seemed like Prog Rock would be a good genre to get into. I've found a few bands myself, such Pekka Pohjola Riff Raff, and of course the giants like Yes and Rush, but it's unfamiliar territory. So to help find more good music, I thought I would ask the forums... What bands would be good for helping a Metalhead get into Prog Rock? List them below. Abnormality, Ahab, Alchemist, Anata, Anthelion, Arsis, Atheist, Augury, Beyond Creation, Black Cobra, Candlemass, Celtic Frost, Celesty, Cephalic Carnage, Crom, Cynic, Dan Swano (his solo album), Dark Fortress, Death, Diablo Swing Orchestra, Dragonlord, Drautran, Eis, Edge of Sanity, Evile, Evoken, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Goatwhore, Gonin-ish, Hypocrisy, In The Woods..., Insomnium, Ixion, Ketha, Maudlin of the Well, Merciless, Miseration, Negura Bunget, Nocturnus, Nox(Netherlands), Obscura, Pathosray, Persefone, Portal, Resurrection, Revocation, Scariot, Slumber, The Legion, Utsu-P, and Wodensthrone.
Edit: While I certainly appreciate all the recommendations in this thread, I would prefer recommendations outside the scope of metal. I have a fairly good grasp on the Extreme Progressive Metal scene, so I've heard of many of the bands listed here even though I haven't checked them out yet. (like Opeth - it's a great suggestion, but I already am starting to listen to their music) Edited by ixsetf - December 05 2013 at 17:41 |

I put in bold the bands from your list that I'm into so you can get where I'm coming from. The first band I'd recommend is my fave King Crimson. Their albums "USA" & "Red" display a very good mix of the heavyness you like and the prog you want to get into. We also have a subgenre called "Tech/Extreme Prog Metal" that includes a couple bands on your list and I'd recommend some of my faves from that group as Opeth, Blotted Science, Enslaved, Mastadon, and Voivod. Happy hunting

Try those guys out. Have you checked out Opeth yet? Lykathea Alflame are a good band too. Urm... Oh sh*t yeah, Rush too! Arguably the first prog metal song recorded |

I certainly am not familiar with all those, maybe half. But I'll take a shot based on the ones I do know. I will exclude anything from the metal subs on PA. Lemme know whatcha think. |

(Great list of bands, man! ) For getting into less-extreme stuff, maybe... Mastodon TesseracT (not a huge fan of the vocals, really. I usually listen to the instrumental versions of their albums) Jethro Tull comes close to metal sorta. (Not really, but whatever) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4B4ZUFow8Qs (Aqualung. Best version I know of.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Ljy6PTbX9I (The Minstrel in the Gallery. Gets heavy about 2 minutes in, I swear.) Beardfish (Especially Mammoth and The Void) Intronaut Several of the bands I would have recommended you already listen to, so that's cool. (Atheist, Death, Dan Sano/Edge of Sanity, In the Woods..., Cynic. And others are just great prog or tech metal that are relatively well-received here like Obscura, Augury and Beyond Creation.) And here's some Gorguts just because. |

Respect for Intronaut... Can't believe I didn't think of those guys. Their second album is killer.

I've been listening to more metal lately instead of prog , so I guess we're in different boats here.
But there's always Anglagard, a lot of their music reminds me of certain Tech Death bands, without much distortion in the guitars, double bass drumming, or growled vocals... if that makes any sense Edited by Eria Tarka - December 05 2013 at 19:45 |

Dan Swano has a bunch of cool prog projects, you should prolly check those out. Nightengale and Unicorn are the two that I can remember off the top of my head
Atheist is pretty insane If you're looking for something closer to prog rock, there's always Fates Warning Edited by iamathousandapples - December 05 2013 at 20:22 |

Out of the big name prog rock acts, King Crimson is the way to go.
A quick couple of other non-metal acts to check out: Anektoden - especially their 'Nucleus' album; definitely a good gateway band to different pastures of prog rock. Shub Niggurath - Wondering about that odd Zeuhl genre by any chance? Their 'Les Morts Von Vite' album is atmospherically intense and HEAVY without the metal tag. |

Great stuff, I am really enjoying some of these. I haven't had the time to go through every artist, but king crimson and subarachnoid space are really good!

What about going through Voivod's discography in chronological order, as their music becomes less typically metallic and more progressive with each LP from Killing Technology onwards? (the preceding records are very punky speed/thrash in the Motörhead/Venom vein, but still very inventive)

I think it's strange that i haven't mentioned Leprous yet.
One of the best metal acts out there right now. Highly suggested. |

Also check out Ved Buens Ende and their successor band Virus,
who did the entire black metal/post-rock fusion a really long time
before it became popular yet still today nobody really sounds like
either at all. VBE are more to the metal side of things, Virus more to the post-rock/math-rock side.
