Is there such a thing as "space rock in opposition"?

I do like Kosmos. I'm also a fan of their drummer's other band, Voivod. They're more metal, but sci-fi concept metal. Very original.

I looked them up though, and the tag says post-rock. Now I'm not that persuaded by stickers - they can stand for a lot of silly things - so what makes them psych/space rock to your ears?

I guess they're called post-rock because they are instrumental and their songs are about 10 minutes or more. I do like a lot of post-rock, but I don't see too much similarity between Tortoise and Sigur Ros other than epic instrumentals. Post-rock, like space rock or prog rock, is not a specific sound or style.

With Evpatoria Report there's definitely a cosmic theme. They're named after a facility in Ukraine that sends out space signals. One of their songs is called "Cosmic Call". They have a very spacey, echoey sound. Like the tones ring on for infinity drifting further and further away. My Brother the Wind has a similar sonic quality. Maybe a little mellower, but I' m definitely digging it.

In "modern" space-rock, I really like these bands: Hidria Spacefolk, Taipuva Luotisuora, Moonwagon and Quantum Fantay. Smile

If anyone's interested in non-rock space music, I would recommend Dr. Fiorella Terenzi. She's an astrophysicist who has made music out of radio waves and microwaves from space converted into sound waves. Also, Roderick Kettlewell has an album called "Bach and the Winds of Mars" (or something to that effect). There are also a few radio shows that play material like this called "Hearts of Space" and "Echoes". They are syndicated on different stations, but I'm sure they can be found online or through TuneIn. They're both kind of new agey, but in a good way.

I'd second the recommendation on Moonwagon.

I'd also highly recommend the Cosmic Dead, particularly this album:
