Pawn Hearts by miles - not a fan of the ealier GG era, but "Octopus" is probably the best from the early 70s albums. Looking forward to these polls!

Both albums here are nothing less than MAGNIFICENT. I really couldn't pick one over the other, even with a gun to my head. Impossible to vote

I'll go with Octopus. Neither album is perfect nor a particular favorite, but both are very good. I just don't dig "Lighthouse Keepers" as much as I should.

Octopus is good, but Pawn Hearts is a masterpiece.

I am currently digging:
Hawkwind, Rare Bird, Gong, Tangerine Dream, Khan, Iron Butterfly, and all things canterbury and hard-psych. I also love jazz! Please drop me a message with album suggestions. |

Pawn Hearts is the massive monster lurking in the sea's abyss, grabbing you with its tendrils and dragging you into the darkness.
Voted that for sure.

I voted for Gentle Giant's Octopus. I just can't get into Van der Graaf Generator. Peter Hammill's constant warbling is such a distraction. I never understood the appeal of his voice. Musically, VdGG are rather one-dimensional, especially compared with Gentle Giant. All IMHO of course.

Some would argue that Octopus is a masterpiece as well. I know I would.

I like Octopus, though it's not a particular favourite GG album of mine, but Pawn Hearts by a landslide. I've been back on a major VdGG kick lately, and to me Pawn Hearts is a stunning album. Pawn Hearts and The Least We Can Do is Wave... may be my favourite VdGG albums.
When I joined PA I liked GG more than VdGG on the whole, mostly due to Hammill's vocals -- in fact, Gentle Giant was my favourite band at the time -- but subsequently I've come to appreciate VdGG much more than Gentle Giant. If this was Acquiring the Taste versus Pawn Hearts it would be closer, but still Pawn Hearts would take it. |
