Topic: Frost* Appreciation Thread Posted: August 17 2014 at 04:17 |
I couldn't find a thread to gush about the guitar solo in Black Light
Machine so here it is. It just keeps going and is perfect all the way
through. It's easily in my top 5 solos of all time. These guys have some
of the best 'softy' parts in all of prog. They aren't as good with the
heavy parts and certain transitions, but overall a great band.
Post
any thoughts or news on the band here (unless there's a substantial
thread already around, in which case feel free to bump and use that one,
but I think a fresh thread is good sometimes).

Well, I've long admired John Mitchell's guitar playing whether he's with Arena or Frost* or whoever, he always brings a lot of emotion into the music he performs. That solo in Black Light Machine is fantastic, but I also love that ending solo in the title-track off Arena's The Visitor. Absolutely sublime.

How about "Serenity" from The Visitor? Otherworldly stuff.
Was there going to be a Frost* album this year? I suspect it's going to be even further in the streamlined direction of Experiments. I think that album is excellent too, but any further in that direction and it might start to f**k with the melodies. Plus I kind of want them to write more epics.

I would recommend the Rockfield Files DVD from last year. The playing and the sound is just so good. I wrote a gushing 5 star review if anyone is interested

Ahh Frost*. This band is in my top five bands, I just wish there was more to listen to. Black Light Machine is a favorite. I actually had the initial keyboard loop as my ringtone for a while. I hadn't heard of a new album, but I've been out of the loop for a while. Would love to have new Frost*.

^ Totally agreed. The wait/anticipation is becoming increasingly frustrating. Jem said he was working on the new one in about 2010 . I know he had some health issues but was under the impression he was back to 100% about 3 years ago. Another one to add to the annals of Floyd, Guns and Roses, Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin (Kate Bush perhaps?). We like to keep 'em waiting.

I'd start with Experiments in Mass Appeal, it's a little less proggy and less epicy than Milliontown so there's less of a disappointment if you go that way. Both albums are great, but Milliontown gets the nod as the better one in my opinion.

I think most of us here find proggy/epicy to be much more accessible than the lean, more alt-ish sound. Given that, I'd start with Milliontown, and also because I'd almost always go chronologically (starting with the first significant album).
