Objectively, they are an awesome band, but they're still not in my top 30 I don't think.

One of my top 10 prog bands. Too bad they didn't last longer and their quality dipped after BSS.

Somewhere between options 5 and 6. I don't like them; I find them a little cringe-worthy even. But "pretentious" is a lazy description.

Depends on the day.
I tend to see them as the Drunk Prog Fan's Favourite Band (hey, it doesn't mean I like them only when drunk!) |

Option 3 (like them but not top tier). Used to be a huge fan decades ago but have since trimmed my listening to a couple of albums on an occasional basis. Still love Tarkus but not much else.

Tarkus is probably the best piece of music they have ever done but their debut is their best album(imo).

Hi, I think that what Keith brought to the table at one time, was needed in rock music, and helped put together a "show", and while this was not, at the time, something that helped classical music (for example), it was in the vein of the "stars" in the movies that becema famous, for being bad boys, girls or otherwise. I do like a lot of things they did, and some of them I remember as very special to my experience (... don't tell me lies ... and Greg is screaming the words ... ) (do you need to know more???) ... however, I really thought that they abused the priviledge for the "show" and eventually became a bit way later. Now, I do not want to sound silly, but if they did ELP live and accoustic, I would be there in 5 seconds. But they won't. If they do their whole shindig with all the noise and lights, I won't bother with it. I like some of the music and it means something more to me than a quick beat off on a given evening. I don't go to music, film or any of the arts, for its "entertainment" value ... I go for its fullfillment value in my life! |

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Their debut sucks. I do not get what people love about it. It's three guys who have no cohesiveness.
Tarkus is three guys who are awesome together. Trilogy is a very good album. Brain Salad Surgery is also wonderful. After that, nothing great. |

No, three guys who have no cohesiveness might be the first RUSH album though.

Great band, at least where their first five albums are concerned.

Same here. They have some incredible songs, but they don't have a single album I can listen to all the way through. A compilation of all their greats could be one of my top 50 albums, though.

Then perhaps you don't fully understand composition. |

Option 2. I believe they should be option 1 for what they have given to prog, and in the 70's they surely were, but they have too many songs I find rather annoying. They have many other wonderful songs, though, but I just haven't been able to like any whole album from them, they always had to do something to drag it down.

I would argue that you could say that about almost any prog band. ELP produced some bad albums (In The Hot Seat and Love Beach) a few mediocre albums (Works 2 , ELPowell, Black Moon) on top of the classic early releases. I don't believe that put out a vast amount of crap. When things started going wrong they 'got out' rather than just plough an AOR /pop furrow for the whole of the eighties like Yes and Genesis pretty much did.
