Both psychedelic albums with early progressive moments.

Caravan's debut is a masterpiece IMO, but VDGG's is better than it's made out to be.

Nothing VdGG have done appeals much to me and the Aerosol Grey Machine is certainly not one of their best efforts.
Although Caravan did much better (and, sadly some far worse) stuff later on, their debut contains enough fine moments to win easily.

I've always thought of these 2 sharing similarities in approach, and love them both pretty much equally, though Caravan probably hits the spot for me a smidge more these days than AGM.

Although VDGG's debut contains the divine Afterwards, Caravan's debut is the best debut album I own from any of the top 10 or so prog giants. Got to be Caravan!

Caravan, but IMO VDGG was much better than Caravan after these debuts.

Graaf. There's 2 versions with a couple of different songs on each
|
All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

The first Caravan album had nothing to recommend it, as far as I'm concerned. Just ancient, dusty tunes no better than, say, anything from the Strawberry Alarm Clock. VDGG's first at least had a very fresh Peter Hammill and voice leading the charge.

Not a big fan of either but I do like Caravan's debut more.

I own the Mercury vinyl (it's a reissue of some sorts.....), it doesn't have the piece called 'Giant Squid', but I didn't think anything else differed.....

I've always liked VDGG's debut album, haven't listened to it in quite a while, I need to give it a listen.

I definitely had to go with Caravan on this one. I'm still on the fence about the VDGG that I own.
