For me it was after Mickey Dee left that I started losing interest in King Diamond. 'Them' suffered from a tinny production but I thought 'Conspiracy' was a really strong effort. After the departure of their superb drummer, I couldn't get into 'The Eye' due to the drum machine usage, and I haven't bothered with their followup stuff except for 'Abigail II' which didn't compare with the original (one of my fav metal albums). The 90's Mercyful Fate stuff was merely passable as well, lacking the occult atmosphere of 80's MF. Melissa is awesome, but I much prefer the vinyl & cassette version of the title track than the CD release which has a different production regarding the vocal track. They're clearer, but without the heavy reverb of the original vinyl edition they lack in the atmosphere that's so apparent in the other tunes. Their other 80's releases definitely have some good stuff as well, although I prefer the Melissa renditions of certain tracks rather than the earlier versions.

whooooooooooooohoooooooo! Nice to see you here buddy! This is kind of a special album for me, I love everything about it especially the vocals! I still remember your review but I always thought of it so highly, I think there's a lot of magic in this one. Unfortunately I could never find their second album...

Ha, yes, but don't worry, I'll be posting back in out `usual' thread later!
I know you really dig that Maelstrom one, it's a very nice album, Sagi! I just played Matching Mole's `Little Red Record' before and it left me very cranky (fighting off sleep on nightshift!), so I had to put on something to lift me up a bit. Moved onto this one now: Beggars Opera - Pathfinder http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=3195 |

Yes, my infamous `Wyatt' issues!
No, I think it's just lack of enough sleep tonight, I was finding it very distracting. I don't like all the silly `humourous' moments scattered throughout the disc, like the voices over the top of the music. I much prefer the first album I think! |

In all fairness, MF/KD's run up to and including Abigail constitutes some pretty damn big shoes to fill. The King's discography's probably work better as concept album narratives than most prog-rock attempts at such too, he's obviously taken notes from David Bowie and Alice Cooper in more departments than stage presence. |
