Topic: Round 1 Detroit Bracket: Univers Zero v. Gong Posted: November 29 2014 at 08:08
From the dark lands of the Rio/Avant Conference we have one of one of its most important bands.
From Belgium
UNIVERS ZERO!!!!
From the smokey wacky Space Rock conference we have one of the great oddball groups in all prog.
From Planet Gong
GONG!!!!
Vegas has Gong listed as a 15 vote favorite due to accessiblity of the music but will fans of the dark and serious triumph over the fun and nonsensicial? We shall see.

THere is only one answer to this question as GonG are one of the greatest most infuencial bands of any genre ever. Both in the Prog world and in the other world. Who else would have come all the way from Planet GonG to give us an absolutely serious blend of Jazz Psycho Canterbury Space Rock without taking themselves too seriously? Not only this but they've been going since time and memorial and the latest album is easily as good as anything they've produced before. Take a listen if you don't believe this grey haired fanboy.
If that other band win this it would be an absolute travesty! Please Please don't let that happen!

I agree with everything you say BUT Univers Zero have produced the music that speaks to my soul & makes the hairs on my arms stand up. I'm sure I'm going to be in the minority and I'll happily vote for Gong in future rounds but I would vote for UZ whomever they were up against.
The latest Gong album is indeed fantastic, but then so is the UZ 2014 release.

Wrong answer but I guess I'll have to give their latest a listen anyway... I do like UZ but, this is GonG man!

Gong, for they are the great jesters of music, and on top of that make great music. Univers is excellent, but not just do Gong edge them out, when I look for dark music I go for bands far darker than them.

Some of the early industrial bands, with Throbbing Gristle taking the cake. Excepting 20 Jazz Funk Greats they've made some horrifying stuff. Basically combine a particularly dark and strange take on "Aumgn" with macabre subject matter described in the first person and you have an idea of what TG did.

Love them both - but why set one against the other? They are so different! However, I saw a member of UZ on the same stage last Saturday night with an occasional member of Gong...
