Hey everybody!
I would like to add Country Joe & the Fish to the archives. They have been a very important band in the psychedelic scene and made some very good proto-prog and psychedelic rock. The band also played folk-rock influenced tracks. A good place for CJ Fish would be proto-prog or psychedelic/space rock. I think they are just as progressive as the Doors, for example. Here are some examples. No, I have all their albums and they are really a great psychedelic rock band, but just that, psychedelic.

I've quickly checked their videos you've posted and ... as Ian and Fernando have said, felt simple psych pop.
Of course, I cannot hesitate in discussing this suggestion in Psych Team. http://progfreak.com/Country-Joe-The-Fish,_dbe,artists,_auto_2942550.xhtml?path=pa/psych |

^Maybe you're just finding interesting music outside of the prog world?
Doesn't sound all that weird to me. I use RYM for the same.....but there is no reason in filling up PA with bands that kinda sorta sound experimental. We're a prog site not a progressive music site. Edited by Guldbamsen - October 10 2015 at 03:13 |

Ah... "progressive" as an adjective is not the same as "Progressive" used as a noun in the genre name "Progressive Rock". If you think that Country Joe and the Fish are Progressive but The Flower Kings are not then that is the error of your misconception that just because a band was being progressive in its day it does not automatically make them a Progressive Rock band.
Country Joe and the Fish are tagged as Psychedelic Rock, Acid Rock and Folk Rock on Wikipedia and Rate Your Music, and as Folk-edged Psychedelic Rock on AllMusic, none of them say Progressive Rock and that seems a fair assessment to me.

Try The Masked Marauder - full of Canterbury-styled organ and an odd structure, but yeah, Psych is just it, with Joe's 'hick' vocals - still, Electric Music.......is a late-60's Classic in every way.

Succintly put as usual, I've never heard of them described as a prog rock band. |

"Proto-prog" I can live with. So let's get a page up for them here.

I guess it could be argued that if Jefferson Airplane have a page here, then why not CJ&TF ?? There's a fine line between certain Psych acts and Proto-Progressive music. Country Joe is in that grey area between the two.

Thank you for pointing that out! My case is now made. I have recently researched proto-prog as thoroughly as I could and in the process listened to the first three Jefferson Airplane albums and the first two Country Joe and the Fish LPs. In my humble opinion there is no question that CJATF were more progressive and experimental than JA. It seems arbitrary at best to include the latter but not the former. The Doors and Spirit are included, and they should be, but that also makes it harder to justify not including CJATF. I also think Love (Arthur Lee's band) should have a page on PA, but I
will make that case another time.

Once more I totally agree. I have tried to add some psychedelic rockbands (CJ Fish, West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, etc) a couple of years ago but since then I have given up completely on it because the activity just didn't seem to add to my happiness. I would still love to see progarchives opening up to what allround vinyl record collectors call 'progressive' in the '67 - '76 period. It includes psychedelic, heavy psych and records with an overall obscure atmosphere. |

I don't think this is going to happen any time soon - mostly because half of PA wants to get rid of proto prog and prog related, and they far outweigh the folks who want to open up to Cream, Country Joe, Grateful Dead and so forth.
But yeah if you can find anyone to sponsor Country Joe's Pesche for proto then by all means go for it. |

Sorry, but they were never Proto Prog simply because they played no part in the evolution of Progressive Rock and their contribution to the genre was zero.
Most America and English Psychedelic Rock was practically by definition unconventional and experimental but not all of it was influential on the development of Progressive Rock.
