I don't know if this has already been posted, and if it has, I'm sorry, but I found this and got a good chuckle out of it.

Haven't seen that before, it's quite funny. Unless you're a Spock's Beard fan. |

Some funny prog-related things off that site: Robert Fripp A. Coin Lark's Tongue's An Ass Pick The lyrical additions made by the popular Star Wars character Yoda were particularly well-received, allowing listeners to finally make sense of Anderson's complex wordings. “We must have wasted all our lives on this moment.” ~ Chris Squire on Stories From Geographic Seas Karma1. Very funny IMO |

I've written many, here are some tips:
a) guitar - get a fuzz tone ("cheapest possible" according to RF), volume pedal (used extensively by Peter Banks, Fripp, Steve Hackett etc.), wah-wah pedal & "all sorts" per Fripp's pedal board. More is better. b) keyboard - any old junk will work, as long as it is processed heavily through effects. I used to enjoy using children's toy keyboards, processed through multiple guitar pedals such as delay, chorus etc. Instant Keith Emerson. c) drums - either find a drummer who can play something besides Led Zeppelin, or do it yourself with a modern drum machine. Who really listens to the drums in prog anyway? d) vocals - find someone who used to sing in a church choir. Chris Squire etc. can't be wrong. If you want squeaky-high Jon Anderson vocals, find a woman...Anderson is one of a kind. e) bizarreness - when you have access to a microphone and signal processors, all sorts of mischief can result. One of my favorite effects was to place a coin inside of a balloon, inflate and tie the balloon, and then get the coin spinning around inside the balloon while holding it to a mike! A very eerie, strange effect that would be hard to emulate with a synth. f) lyrics - never be upbeat unless you are Jon Anderson and can sing about wonderful spiritual things (I can't!). I've written about the Black Sea in Romania, the AntiChrist, whatever. g) bass guitar - get a Rickenbacker. You have no business making prog music if you do not have a Rick. This is mine. Most of all, HAVE FUN! It's a blast! |

My tips on writing a prog rock song:
1) Write a song that you love, focus on the noises in your brain or natural feeling 2) Don't worry about if it is prog or not because that will ruin you and you will end up sounding like Dream Theater, Transatlantic, or one of those bands that don't do anything new 3) Never quit, and always make sure to listen to the song 5000 times and add the little noises that your brain adds 4) Write another song that you love 5) Find out it doesn't change time signature at all 6) Don't change the time signature just to change it, change time signatures to let the music flow one way or another, something natural 7) Don't do anything that you don't love... and repeat steps 1-6 until you get too old to play music 8) Die in obscurity because you didn't pander, even to the prog people, but you have your integrity. 9) You're dead now. No more steps.

17th rule of the internet: "Once a thread has more than five posts people stop reading the OP"
Anyway... yes, we see it every year when someone else discovers it for the first time. Shortly someone will discover the PA Uncyclopedia entry and post that, then the young'uns here will edit themselves into it just like they did last time and the time before that and the time before that. But other than that, yeah, it's still funny.

'When discussing Prog Rock, it is good to occasionally mention bands other than Pink Floyd and King Crimson, to show that you are a true connoisseur.'
and yes, i've seen it before

Wow that's pretty awful. It's so ironic that some prog fan can be so narrow minded, considering that the whole purpose of the genre is to break the rules. Could be a troll though.

If you're talking about OP, I think its a just a joke. Unless you're joking too, in which case I'm looking very foolish. |
