Love the discussion in here on this so far.  I voted for like for sure.  Such great vocals and melody.

My history with them is when I had my first stereo system of my own which no one else could play anything on but me.  It was an old Midland 8-track AM/FM radio system, the first two 8-track albums I bought with my own cash was The Carpenters - Now & Then (knew of their work from radio) and Black Sabbath - Paranoid (never heard before but got on advice from a school friend).  Oddly enough, I loved/liked both...I guess that may explain my eclectic taste in music as long as it is good!

Not long after that, I had a Three Dog Night 8-track album I traded for Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon with a friend and I was off and running.... nice memories this thread has triggered!

The list of artists and bands that recorded for A&M Records (Herb Alpert & Jerry Moss) is way too long to post here and included many big names from the 60s and 70s. They operated at the Charlie Chaplin studios that they purchased in a deal that included the Chaplin mansion.
In the early years The Tijuana Brass, Sergio Mendes and The Carpenters basically carried the label.

This is a great attitude to have and exercise.  Keep your heart open to music because you might find that some artists do not appeal to you at all during one era of your life, while in another time in your life you may revisit that artist and find their album appeals very much.  We are not necessarily static in our appreciations over the course of time.  Smile

Anyone of a certain age was bound to hear the Carpenters on a near daily basis - they were all over AM radio and had a huge following among the as-of-yet unclassified "adult contemporary" lot......Carpenters, Anne Murray, America, Captain and Tennile, Manilow.....the beat goes on.  Doesn't mean I have to like it, but when it's stuck in your head.....whaddyagonnado?
I like to feel the suspense when you're certain you know I am there.....

Fun fact:

Klaatu's original version of "Calling Occupants Of Interplanetary Craft" reached #62 on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart.
The Carpenters' cover reached #32.

The hidden influence of Herb Alpert should be mentioned here.  And don't dismiss this cat as some old fart from the Al Martino era.  He loved MAGMA and gave them US distribution when no one here would touch them.
There are a number of covert cats in the record industry, who while successful, were still in it for the love of the music and what could be done with it.

On a darker side, my former girlfriend was nearly killed in an auto accident when a wrong way driver, on the off ramp, slammed into Karen Carpenters's luxury car and she (my girlfriend) rear ended Karen's car.  A vacuum cleaner in the back of the car, pushed the ex into the windshield (no airbags then).  Collapsing on the Santa Ana Freeway, face battered, in front of Karen, all she remembered was Karen saying, "Look at what they've done to my Mercedes."  "Why do birds, suddenly appear...?"

Yeah I like em. Remind me of childhood, and my mum listening to them while doing the housework during the school holidays. Some of those songs haunt me. In a nice way..
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

I liked them in a way and I still do. Maybe I shouldn't.

Option #1 anyway.

They were very big at the time but I was into hard rock so...
I know Richard was a big vinyl collector then because I saw him one afternoon at the Licorice Pizza record store in Downey. He was pulling albums out of the bins left and right and bought at least fifty that day.
My friend that worked in the store told me he did that every two or three months.

Yeah they were on the radio every day for at least five if not ten years straight.

I'm sure.   It was Richard who had to go to rehab for quaaludes, Karen just vomited a lot.
