One one hand we have a rhythmically-driving, at times hard-rocking symphonic track that features virtuosic performances from everyone playing on it. On the other hand we have something that Peter Hammill sings on. Yes wins!

Isn't incessantly replaying prog albums an indication of how great they are more than anything?

If I were "king of the rainforest", I certainly would not "want to do" any lemmings. I didn't think their habitat was the rainforest anyway, as more likely they'd live in a Siberian khatru if khatru meant tundra. I think khatru loosely translates as "the childlike wonderment experienced upon unexpectedly finding a gently used diaper in a box of Lucky Charms cereal."
As for the songs, I vote "Lemmings" Love it. |

Not objectively great and not really for me in a long-term subjective manner either. What was great for me at one time may not be great for me at another stage in my life. Music I once thought great may no longer seem that great anymore. it might even seem poor when compared to music I now prefer to listen to. I've been addicted to a fair amount of music that I once played incessantly and then got sick of (that earworm can be difficult to shake off especially for an OCD type individual). It can be an addiction that one's happy to break or one just gradually loses interest as you discover new things. I used to be addicted to cigarettes, not that I ever thought they were great, but now just the smell of them makes me feel sick. I used to play Gentle Giant incessantly, but later I found the band hard to bear. I used to adore Fragile and played it a great many times, but have barely wanted to listen to it in two decades. Maybe had I not played those so incessantly back then I might like them more now. For me the fresher discoveries I tend to prefer. I rather like it when I play the music and don't remember every single note, harmony, and instrumental flourish. In those cases I can just listen to the whole thing in my head if I want to. By the way, I heard Rush far too many times because my roommate used to play the music incessantly. Sometimes music is hard to avoid even when one wants to. |
