The Lamb, without a doubt.
I can only really handle about half of TFTO, and I have to be in the right frame of mind to deal with Soft Machine at the best of times. Out of my mind on drugs is the best way to appreciate them, I've found, and that doesn't happen much these days.

^ Best enjoyed by 'being chipped off your tits' is hardly the best Health & Safety strategy in the world. It seems mildly perverse to have a relatively obscure Canterbury band in a poll with two uber successful Symph Prog ones frankly. (says 'Stay at home' voter)

My five favorite albums are double LP's:
1) Tales From Topographic Oceans 2) The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway 3) Quadrophenia 4) London Calling 5) The Similitude Of A Dream
Double albums are where my favorite artists stretch their legs and try on some new clothes.

First vote for Third. Since it was mentioned, London Calling beats all three.

Third beats the other two by a country mile.

The Lamb is a brilliant album, but Third is even better in my opinion.

Today? The Lamb...but Tales is brilliant as well. Third is a really strong record and I understand why some might prefer it.

Two random guys agreed to shake hands. Just Because. They felt like it, you know. It was an agreement of sorts...a random agreement.

I love The Lamb and Third just about equally so no vote. Love he first cut on Tales and then my mind tends to wander.

Have you tried listening to each record on separate occasions? I used to feel that but when I tried it that way I noticed how good sides 3 and 4 are.

The Lamb, Tales and Third, all separate by a very thin line.
