I kept seeing Big Big Train coming up here so I thought I would check them out. Any Suggestions?

The double English Electric is a delight for my ears (and soul), maybe yours too.

The one I got first is English Electric Full Power. I would think that's the way to go, with both English Electric albums, plus a few extra tracks that were later released as an EP. Besides that one, I have Folklore, but I feel some of the charm and magic is gone... however, it's well loved around here anyway. I still have to get the new ones, and The Underfall Yard. However, English Electric was a very pleasant and enjoyable surprise, very beautiful music and all. One thing that struck me about the songs on the album is that they didn't sound like they were trying to be prog for the sake of being prog (which seems to be a very comon sin for bands lately), rather they used the prog elements to enhance and serve the music (and that is exactly what bothers me from Folkore, that one seems to have more of the trying to be prog element in it). With this album, Big Big Train seems to have taken the torch of Genesis that they left behind after Selling England by the Pound.

Another recommendation for English Electric Full. But I'd recommend Difference Machine, Underfall Yard, Far Skies EP. If any of that grabs you, you branch out to Gathering Speed or Folklore.

I'd recommend EE1 and, to a lesser degree, EE2 rather than EEFP, which is cranked up beyond full power: the proper sequence of the songs has been mixed up and a few leftovers of Spot the Pigeon+-level have been added. Nevertheless, I don't think you can go wrong with any Longdon-era BBT.
EE1 > Grimspound > Folklore > EE2 = TUY >= BS#2 Live: FS&S is strongly recommended. |

Grimspound is also an excellent choice for followup. |

The English Electric is fantastic but try first The Underfall Yard, the previous to English, which is absolutely amazing.

For me they seemed to have peaked (at least for now) with The Underfall Yard and English Electric.

I have all of the Longdon albums (and love them all!) I have not heard any pre-Longdon albums. Difference Machine has been mentioned a few times here; is that my next step? How does it compare musically?

I bought up the entire back catalogue after realising how much I loved English Electric Part One. The DVD 'Stone and Steel' would be a great place to start but is also available as an MP3 download. The Difference Machine is also extremely good although most albums by BBT are worth having. English Boy Wonders is probably the weakest although it used to be available on an American music site as a free download , the name of the site (sorry) escapes me.
