Topic: Classic instrumental Pink Floyd-like song Posted: September 15 2017 at 05:00 |
Hello,
This is probably a long shot but I'm looking for a specific song that is a long instrumental very similar to Pink Floyd's Shine On You Crazy Diamond or Marooned from the Division Bell with that 70s guitar. I've scoured the forums here and the closest I could find is Porcupine Tree's The Sky Moves Sideways Phase One (the chilled out guitar middle bit around the 6:30 mark). But the song I'm looking for is entirely like that, quite slow and chilled, it sounds mid to late 70s with a slight tinge of funk/disco in it (as much as Another brick in the wall / Alan Parsons has funk/disco elements) and is entirely instrumental but it could also be early 80s. This is probably a very classic and known song because I'm sure I've heard it before and when I recently heard it I didn't have my phone to Shazam it which was annoying. It should be at least 10 minutes long or so. Any ideas would be appreciated! Edited by atomcoeur - September 15 2017 at 05:22 |

Look into Eloy. Try Astral Entrance, and maybe Fatal Illusions. Both start out very Shine On-like.

Thanks! The guitars are there but the song I'm looking for is more chill out with no vocals.

Maybe you're looking for Ice by Camel? Certainly sounds like it. Floydian instrumental with nods to Shine On.
If you dig that sound you should check out Yugoslavian act Tako as well. Their 1980 album that I'm not about to spell (yikes) is like Shine On with the add on of flute and some sparing vocals. P.S. Took me 12 times to post this... |

Camel and Eloy are close but looking for something even more dreamy (Camel - Ice and Eloy - Ocean are excellent though!)

This is the first to spring to my mind, but maybe doesn't fit (just woke up). Laserium Floyd by Le Orme.
EDIT: missed the ten minutes long or so requirement (I should have taken the time to read more carefully before posting). Edited by Logan - September 16 2017 at 09:24 |

I guess this is not what you are looking for, but if you haven't heard the last Pink Floyd album, The Endless River, then you should certainly do so.

There is some Jane from the seventies. Maybe Fire ,Water,Earth & Air and Between Heaven & Hell. Hangman from the LP Together is pretty cool. I always liked those first 4 Camel albums better than anything that PinK Floyd ever did. Floyd is too hyped there's plenty of stuff out there. I was in a record store today and they're asking stupid prices for sh*tty copies of Floyd albums. Ridiculous. They were also trying to cash in on Steely Dan albums that are worn to sh*t as well. Shameful Back on topic. Frank Marino has some cool stuff as well. The 21 minute version of Strange Universe is far out.

I'm confused. Are you referring to a specific song you heard before or one you haven't heard yet?

how about "Im Krater blühn wieder die Bäume" by Amon Düül 2?
or "City of Lagoons" by Hawkwind? or "Elastic Minute" by Christian Boulé? or "A Sprinkling of Clouds" by Gong? or "Pipe of Dreams" by Curved Air? Edited by BaldJean - September 18 2017 at 08:50 |

I would say look into Agitation Free. I heard something by them once that was very Floyd like.
I also remember hearing something that sounded like "meddle" era Floyd that turned out to be early Fleetwood Mac(I think the title track to "future games")but I think it had vocals. AF didn't I don't think. |
