Because funky rhythms (funky grooves) are so common in disco, I quite often link the two (of course there's a lot of disco funk and very funky disco). I guess a difference between the two as distinct genres has to do with the harmonies (not sure how distinct a genre funk even is). I'm sometimes not sure where funk ends and disco begins and vice versa. A lot of disco is funky, but then so is a lot of rock that isn't disco. To me the Tangerine Dream reminds me more of the disco umbrella than funk per se, even if it is quite funky in its beat (part of my association has to do with the technology). I'm hardly an expert on this, mind you. I'll probably learn some new things. |

I refer to Disco when it's 120BPM or faster and that hi-hat beat is constant 4/4 with minimal drum breaks. Thinking about it, I could almost describe the motorik beat and I love both.

"No-one will say Hawkwind disco! Until I am dead" No, I am not absolutely serious, half.

I get that. Another thing I hear in a lot of disco are these instrumental flourishes that can be like descending arpeggios but swirling. Sometimes you'll hear it in strings or with synths in electro-disco and otherwise.... Disco is a feeling, a feeling that can get inside you, and it may compel some people to shake that booty to dislodge that feeling deep inside or to enhance that feeling. I guess that would make it more like a tapeworm than an earworm, so that didn't come out quite right. |
