I's either great or just meh, depending on the Floyd fan. Which camp are you in?

you mean "A Saucerful of Secrets"? My favorite psychedelic PF album, along with More and Ummaguma Live. TBH I always found the Barrett song as the weakest song on the album. |

Ummagumma was my first Floyd lp....smoked some weed with some college friends and heard Ummagumma. Went back to hear the first 2....some decent tracks on both ,but they never really captured my interest as much as the ones after Umma.
I guess just an ok lp then...but really like Set the Controls.

I love it. I heard A Saucerful of Secrets for the very first time yesterday and it's now on my list of albums to go out and buy. ![]() I'm not so keen on The Piper at the Gates of Dawn album though, mainly because of Syd Barrett's influence on it.

Barrett’s influence is still strong on this album. Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun was performed as a five piece quite a bit before the album was released, and his footprint is all over the album, even though his writing credits are extremely limited. Indeed, I would argue that they never really broke free of Syd until at least Meddle. Others, of course, would argue it was even later. He was most certainly on their minds in the recording of WYWH.

Great album. That said, for me PF could just as well have called it a day after DSOTM. Division Bell is my next stop after DSOTM. That said, there are some real gems on The Final Cut, which I still listen to on occasion. Ironically, I love all of Rogers solo albums, I just can't stand his PF control freak albums.

Absolutely great, the greatest Floyd album after Atom Heart, even slightly greater than Piper!
It was the last 67-79 Floyd album I got as vinyl, it was really hard to find from Finland in eighties. Edited by Mortte - February 20 2020 at 01:27 |

It's a nice album, though yet not among their greatest. I love Let there be more Light and Remember a Day. And of course I also love Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun and A Saucerful of Secrets, though I like much more their live versions (Ummagumma and Live at Pompeii). Jugband Blues deserves some attention too, but mostly because of the almost prophetic... or perhaps just preceptive, lyrics it's got.

the era of Floyd which I prefer began with Saucerful and ended with Meddle. I love Piper but it inhabits a different part of my heart for very different reasons.. as does post DSOTM Floyd
