Our head of military has already shot down his idea of using the military to stop looting. If things keep going the way they are going now, trump will not have enough power or supporters to pull off any stunts. I get the impression that top military leaders in this country are prepared to stop any antics if needed.
Trump's fortunes have changed very much recently, his power and support are not what they used to be.

The photo op was not aimed at Christians per se, but at the Evangelical Right, which not only supplies Rump with votes but also big campaign dollars. And the funny thing is that he didn't need to do it. As long as he keeps packing the courts with conservative judges, which is all that they really care about, he's got them in his pocket.

And Evangelicals interviewed after the photo op did say they approve.  They don't mind how bad he gets as long as he is 'their guy', that simple.
Absolutely. They believe he was sent from heaven! Can you believe that?

I'm sure that Trump thinks the phrase "second coming" has something to do with sex.

There was an interesting, and not entirely unfair, opinion piece in today’s Times newspaper which made the point that locations where these atrocities have taken place, such as Minneapolis, LA and etc. have, for donkeys years, if not forever, been run by Democrats. Republicans have not had a look in for elections in Minneapolis, and there must, therefore, be some logical necessity for the so-called liberal party in America to take a long deep look at itself and the institutions it runs.

I might also point out that inequality in America rocketed under Clinton, especially, and Obama wasn’t much better. I have an exceptional travelogue written by Paul Theroux, where he travels and reports on the Deep South, including Alabama, Clinton’s old fiefdom, and the poverty and job losses there, especially amongst poor black folk, was shocking.

Trumpalot’s reaction to recent events have been pretty appalling. But the institutional issues and longstanding economic apartheid in the country are not his fault, and it is harmfully simplistic to say they are. As ever, there are more nuanced reasons for these problems.

That's an interesting point, I'd not considered it and I will look into how that may have been effected (the longtime disintegration of institutions).  I highly suspect much of it has to do with the combination of wages stagnated, corporations not being properly taxed and jobs taken out of my country to line the pockets of the wealthy few.

I lived in Tennessee for 9 years, and yes, the lines between rich and poor were very marked there, although I wouldn't say it was more so than anywhere else (I've also lived in California, Colorado and now, in Oregon and traveled extensively in the US).  There is a lot more blatantly open racism present in the south, which probably is to be expected, at least from my experience.

Yes these things are not the fault of 45, but he is responsible for the destruction of many of our protective measures for both people and the environment, for delayed response to the pandemic and for deliberately and openly trying to divide the American public by his response to the current situation.

^ My grandson works in an office in Newark, NJ. He's working form home but said there has been no looting or violence with the protests there. I suppose having a racially mixed police force in that city has helped. Historically, no targeting of blacks have taken place, as far as I know. Now imagine that?

Re lazland:
Clinton is from Arkansas, not Alabama.

P.S. Racism is everywhere, it is the true global pandemic. People who think their locale is somehow more enlightened than somewhere else are just fooling themselves.
I've lived all over the US and have traveled all over Europe and Mexico. I have not found that place that is free from racism and xenophobia yet.

No looting in Memphis either where we have a similar police force.

My apologies. Of course it is Arkansas. Blame it on a hard day at work.

Well if the point of your first post is that liberals don't understand racism any better than anyone else, and not always any better at eradicating it. I would agree with that. A different type of denial is sometimes at work.

Sadly Newark has had notorious racial problems and bad police for decades.   Maybe that's changed but I doubt it.   You would think a mixed police department would make a difference but, as with the election of a black man to the presidency, it's not so simple.

Re lazland: Racism in large liberal cities is called gentrification, where old working class neighborhoods are replaced with expensive hip condos and latte shops with wifi. It happens a lot.

Trump's fortunes have changed very much recently, his power and support are not what they used to be.

And even with the support he still has, only the truly twisted & evil ~ like Lou Dobbs or Sean Hannity ~ would support something like that.   I think even Mitch McConnell would tell him to get out.   In a way I wish he'd try it--  how fine it would be to see him led out of the White House in shackles between two US Marshalls.

I'll take it.

Absolutely agree. Anyone reading any of my more political posts will know that I loathe such metropolitan liberal w**kery. Always have, even in the days of my leftie yoof.

I live in a very rural part of West Wales, solidly normal, no lattes to be seen for miles, and where men are proud to call themselves men, and the sheep are simply gorgeous.

Actually, I witnessed an amusing scene at my local railway station cafe last year (I say local. It is about 20 minutes away). Lady from London who had been visiting walked in. She asked, when prompted, for a skinny white. Welsh lady serving asked...Do what?”. Order repeated. Lady serving replied. We only do tea and coffee here, love.

But he's making it worse. Blaming immigrants for takin' ER JAWBS! What's frightening is that he's resorting to using the race card too.

The problem with the Democrats is that many of them are also bought off by the same elite that also runs the Republican Party and it doesn't help that the Democratic base are mostly a bunch of affluent whites.

We're not real sophisticated around here either. I was performing at a casino in Mississippi and the hotel bar that was rarely used was being handled by what seemed to be the cleaning lady. I made the mistake of asking for a martini, she said 'a what?'. Anyway, she gave me something lemon lime flavored with a couple olives in it. It was actually kind of interesting.
