I think maybe part of it has to do with this being the 40th anniversary of Moving Pictures. |
We were having a bit of a discussion about this on therushforum. I believe usually record labels have to reach out to Billboard to ask them to check when an older album has surpassed certain landmarks in sales, so it may have reached 5x platinum at a number of times in the last few years (I would guess around January or February of last year due to Neil's passing). So this only being certified this year makes me think the label may have reached out to Billboard recently to figure out what record it holds so they can put up to date information about it in the liner notes of the yet-to-be-announced Moving Pictures 40th anniversary edition. |
Yes, we were. In fact I was the one who started the thread on there about it(I go by New World Man on there not AFKC so you probably didn't know that was me). Yep, someone mentioned that about how someone from the label typically has to reach out and I agree with that. I've heard that too. Maybe they will update some of the others and maybe some other prog bands will get their albums updated also.
Anyway, it's unlikely it just reached 5x platinum on Monday. It probably reached 5x at least several months ago(like you said maybe sometime after Neil's passing). It's hard to know for sure though and all we can do is speculate. If you look at the riaa website it has in the court of the crimson king as having reached gold in 1977. I'm pretty sure it has gone platinum by now but since Fripp or whoever doesn't care about album sales it hasn't been updated and nobody has bothered to look. You would think after the fiftieth anniversary for that album someone would look but maybe not or maybe it still hasn't reached sales of million in the US. Who knows. I would like to think if the Sex Pistols album reached platinum in 1992 then KC would have gone platinum by now but we'll probably never know(or at least not for a while). I can think of other examples too but I don't want to go too far off topic here.

Hey NWM! I'm Entre_Perpetuo over there
Yeah I doubt Fripp cares about it. He's very much a music first, fame last kind of guy. I hope it's gone platinum, especially after Kanye sampled 21CSM over a decade ago now helping bring attention from a broader audience. The Pistols I feel like made a bigger commercial splash when they first arrived (and that's their only album) so I can see how they would hit platinum first, but it's been long enough by now to have both of them I agree. |
I thought maybe that was you but wasn't sure.
Not to derail this Rush thread but a few albums I think(besides KC's first)that probably need to be recertified are David Bowie - ziggy stardust and spider's from mars(only gold). THey have Close to the Edge at platinum(1998). You would think with all the attention it has gotten(admittedly mostly in prog circles)that it might be close to two times platinum by now. |
Oh yeah those Bowie records should've been recertified back in 2016 some time after he passed. I think Bowie has become more of an icon as time has gone on and people have recognized the value in someone who stuck to their artistic vision and remained different and ahead of the curve for so many years, similar to Rush. No way Ziggy and Hunky haven't gone up an extra certification since. Close To The Edge I could see also having achieved that since the internet has allowed prog to become a bit more mainstream than before. |
Bowie has definitely been neglected as far as the RIAA is concerned. Hunk Dory actually isn't even certified at all.
As for Yes, the first two, Drama, Yesterdays and anything(not counting a best of)after Union has been certified at all. I don't think anything after Union has sold more than 200,000 but I bet the earlier ones I mentioned are pretty close if they aren't already due. CTTE was probably well over platinum by 1998 so maybe for the fiftieth anniversary in two years it will get bumped up. We'll see. Genesis might be due for something also. Nothing before selling england has been certified even gold and I would bet Foxtrot at least is due for that.

I'm hoping they repress using the original Robert Ludwig cut, I do like the recent Abbey Road cut mastered by Sean Magee, but that is a DMM pressing, it's missing a bit of low end....still an amazing sounding record. But for a 40th anniversary they should go back to RL's version as it's a massive sounding record. |
I.... don't know anything about MP pressings . I do know that whatever mastering my CD is (and also whatever pressing my record is) sounds phenomenal. If I've got the lesser one then I can't wait to here a greater one for the 40th anniversary box! |
The Mobile Fidelity sound labs 24K Ultra Disc and the DVD/bluray 24/96k stereo LPCM are the best possible copies you can get. |

Just look in the deadwax (run out groove) area of your record and you should see stamp or etching of who cut it. If both sides are stamped "Masterdisk RL" that's Robert Ludwig, that is the holy grail version. Some are stamped RL on one side and "HW" on other, that's Howie Weinburg he also was an engineer at Masterdisk, also a great sounding version, these be the US pressings.

I just noticed on the riaa website that Moving Pictures was certified 5x platinum on Monday(19th). |
An album that is aging very well.......... |
I think maybe part of it has to do with this being the 40th anniversary of Moving Pictures.

Vapor Trails is the return if Rush, and of course Neil coming back to the band, music and his kit. It has a very raw, hard edge sound and is a main reason I never complained about the mix being so loud, brick walled because it just made sense to me.....It says we are back! |
The mix didn't bother me at all. In fact, I don't think the remixed album is better. It's cool to have (and it's definitely not as loud), but it's not better. |
The remix is better for dynamics and resolution, which that album has that the original misses. I can more appreciate the details in the music now......I agree its not better but I do like the remix version, I could live with either. Alex probably was the most vocal about the original versions mix results.

Catcher nailed it. It was their "return" in a big way, with an emphasis on power — power controlled and directed in that distinctly Rush way.
If songs like "Freeze," "Earthshine," "One Little Victory," or "Secret Touch" don't hook you, I'm not sure what will. Imagine a return to the Caress/Kings sound, but modern. That's Vapor Trails.

^Actually I don't think there's any keboards at all on it. Snakes and Arrows has a little bit including mellotron. CA seems to have the most out of the last two.
