Two tracks from the mid 80s (1984 and 1985) that I thought might be interesting to compare. Both are quite short and almost the length, and both have an 80s sound.

For those that don't know both:

Art Zoyd - Sortie 134 (Part 2)

Jethro Tull - Tundra

I thought about adding a Kraftwerk from 1985's Electric Café, but will keep it simple with just these two.

EDIT: Meant to type 1984 and 1985.

Art Zoyd was as vital and relevant as ever in 1985. Can't say the same about Jethro Tull.

I feel like Heavy Horses was Jethro Tull's last "great" album (one might say good), and I prefer the album that came before that. I like early JT the most (1968 to 1970). In the 1980s the biggest (most commercial) classic early names in Prog floundered methinks. A common opinion here. RIO, and plenty of so-called avant prog and experimental and quirky rock, was strong in the 80s. Those that weren't sounding really commercial to begin with didn't feel the need to fit in and adapt (adapt badly in so many cases) to a commercial sound. Lots of them went really AOR (meaning the genre). There is an awful lot I love from the 80s when it comes to a wide variety of music (including various commercial New Wave music). Of course Jethro Tull won a controversial Grammy in the 80s. That said, I find the JT track fun especially with the repeated "Tundra" line.

Poor Tull, they have some catching up to do. Apart from TaaB, they have never been on top of my lists. I'm going for Art Zoyd too here; this one is from one of my preferred albums of theirs.

I actually like quite a bit of Tull's 80s output and this is no exception, but you put it up against an excellent Art Zoyd piece, so we go to 8:0 now (who'd have thought?).

In my musical world TULL hasn't done a lot for me. Not big on Folk so Aqualung and TaaB standout along with one of their live ones. No this is a mismatch. ART ZOYD!

At least neither of these are folk (I love folk personally, especially acid folk and Nick Drake). A mismatch in terms of quality arguably, but I would argue not altogether in terms of music qualities. :)

Very pleasantly surprised that Art Zoyd, who I will almost always vote for, is doing so well.  Hope this trend continues.
