An absolute legend with a fantastic filmography. His influence can be seen in the likes of Denzel Washington and Chadwick Boseman's performances. RIP, see ya on the other side man.

God’s blessings PHIL CHEN.
This East Los Angeles guitarist’s dearest, ever kindest and sincere bassist, musician, personal Jamaican friend and old bandmate Phil «Mr. Paparazzi» «Tremor» Chen will be extremely missed. Phil's massive span of career works has included holding down the bass for Rod Stewart, Pete Townsend, Jeff Beck, Mick Jagger, Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Ray Charles, Donovan, “Tommy" soundtrack album by The Who, Robbie Krieger of The Doors; and way too much to mention. At one time, I helped Phil Chen move from his Van Nuys house, and Phillip had the tallest stacks of Gold and Platinum album awards he played on that I've ever seen by a Los Angeles guitarist musician. God’s protect Phillip’s soul forever☼ __̴ı ̡͌l̡*̡̡ ̴̡ı̴̴̡ ̡̡͡| ̲̲͡ |

"Love is Only Sleeping" is one of the few Nesmith sung songs for the Monkees that Nesmith didn't write himself. It was written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weill.
Note Micky goofing around with a prototype moog synthesiser in the clip. The Monkees where one of the first bands to utilise the moog, and it is particularly well featured on a Nesmith penned song "Daily Nightly", with lead vocals handed over to Micky. The poetic imigary utilised in this song is simply marvelous. It is about the same riots in LA that Steven Stills wrote about in "For What It's Worth. "Pychedelic."

...yeah, on a 12 string electric guitar no less! I've seen footage of the guy wailing on a Les Paul, wish I could find it! Monkees were really under-rated in my opinion. The song "Sweet Young Thing" by Nesmith is remarkable, it seems to have a bit of a Scottish vibe! |

Mike Nesmith was a musical idol for me from before I discovered prog way back when. He was a true pioneer in music IMHO and if you don't think that is the case, listen to "Writing Wrongs" from "The Birds the Bees and the Monkees" from 1968. A great Emerson, Lake and Palmer track from before ELP was even thought of:
Then there were the two albums "The Prison" and "The Garden", books with soundtracks. As high concept as you can get. R.I.P. Pappa Nez

^ That was a good one, touches of the Stones and Byrds. Mike must've been horrified he had to fake-play that solo . |

This one song by the Monkees inspired me to pick up lead guitar when I was only about 10!
The blazing solo channels Al Dimeola, it was played by jazz guitarist Louie Shelton. RIP, Wool Hat! |

R.I.P. to the great Jamaican bass player Robbie Shakespeare (of Sly and Robbie fame). He has played with just about every great Jamaican reggae star plus many American and British bands also. He was 68.

It's a shock, I believed János - always so energetic, always a sportsman - will live till his late 90s.
Farewell, Mecky. ![]() The world became an emptier place without you. Thank you for magical music you generously shared with people around the globe. We come and we go. Most of us leave almost nothing to others, but your voice will keep on giving people hope, love and beautiful dreams. |
