After reading the comparison with Mike Oldfield in The Wire many years ago, I checked this wonderful band out. This was (partly) the sound of prog in the 90s/2000s - a big statement I know.

As pioneers of post rock, and one of the first bands to be given that label, I don’t think it’s too contentious to suggest Tortoise were/are prog. That they were also largely influenced by both Krautrock and jazz fusion, is another indication of being at least prog-related, if people are unwilling to acknowledge them as prog outright.
You could compare them to Stereolab, in this regard. Another pioneer of post rock, and another one of the first bands to be given that label. Another band largely influenced by both Krautrock and jazz fusion. Intriguingly, the two bands began at approximately the same time, on opposite sides of the Atlantic. Each came up with a sound that was drawn from similar influences, and would be grouped together as part of the fledgling post rock movement, quite coincidentally at the same time. I’ve always thought that was kind of cool. [EDIT] I forgot to say what I voted for. Quite possibly because it was the first Tortoise I heard/bought, I’m going for TNT. [Another EDIT] I don’t know about anyone else, but I’ve always found it strange that Tortoise are in PA, but not Stereolab. Not that I’m suggesting they need to be, or that I want them to be. Just saying… 🤗😉 Edited by nick_h_nz - May 12 2022 at 03:42 |

I’ve only heard TNT and I like it very much. I’ll have to check out the rest of their discography.

I'm extremely fond of all their four first - in very different ways. Perhaps their two first and Standards a little more than TNT, but I don't feel like voting for one over the others.

In all honesty, I'm a bit slow in catching up with Tortoise - this is the first I've heard of them.

Like both albums, very good band, saw them at Big Ears. Nice stuff.

Great band, very innovative. I don't have a favorite album, I'm used to hearing them on mixtapes. They are popular with the nu jazz and neo-exotica crowd.

Millions and TNT are untouchable but the self-titled debut holds a dear place in my heart. Saw them while higher than expected back in 2007, as they chose our humble city as the first stop of their nationwide tour (they played Bonnaroo the day after).

A Lazarus Taxon, though I suppose that’s cheating.

I have only heard the first four, and while I could have voted for any of the first three, I went with Millions Now Living Will Never Die. Superb band.
As for Stereolab not being in PA, a band I love, here was this discussion on that topic a couple of years ago or so, but it's come up more than once:"Why, again, is Stereolab not included in PA?" CLICK Edited by Logan - May 12 2022 at 17:34 |

Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. It can be much like that with music for me.

Tortoise are very important to me, because when I heard them on the radio in the 1990s, probably just after "Millions Now Living..." came out, they were the first band I heard of to be referred to as post rock (even though I knew the last two Talk Talk albums at that point already). I loved what they were doing, so they were my gate to this new genre with much great music to come for me, and I love them to this day. They're one of the few bands that opened a new approach to me, very original and unique. Regarding the poll, I'm very fond of It's All Around You even though most don't seem to appreciate that one much. Then probably Millions Now Living Will Never Die and The Catastrophist. But I like all their albums and they have never let me down.

TNT is my favourite, but they're all worth a listen.
A Lazarus Taxon is a great 3CD collection of non album tracks that is well worth investigating. |
